There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy Harvard & others must counter this quickly The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

This is bleak. A database of cancelled NIH grants.

Bipartisan report recommends prioritizing biotechnology for our nation’s future— cutting NIH, NSF, cutting university research is the opposite of what we should be doing. Americans should be furious DOGE is sabotaging our future and helping China win in a critical technology. www.biotech.senate.gov

At the largest gathering of physicists in the world, the American Physical Society says it won’t back down in the face of executive orders to limit diversity programmes.

“This assault [on universities] is part of a broader endeavor, an attempt to take over every key institution in America and make each a vehicle to impose right-wing ideology. If they have to sacrifice cures for disease, so be it.”🚨 1/ @paulwaldman.bsky.social 💯 gets it. paulwaldman.substack...

NIH “is expected to cut between 3,400 and 5,000 positions from its workforce of 20,000 in coming days.” Story by @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2025/03/14/n...

"Pretending that federal cuts to entomological research will save money is like deciding to save on farming costs by not buying seeds—it undercuts the very foundation of future growth and productivity."

Had a great week meeting with Leigh from TNC meeting with staff from SASC, HASC, and Rep. Tokuda's staff to discuss how S&T progress on northern giant hornets can be applied to eradicate the greater banded hornet from Guam so it doesn't get to HI or the mainland US.

Many Medicaid recipients do not know they receive it because Medicaid is called different things in different states. The public narrative of Medicaid focuses on a distant other, but 40% of US children and 60% of nursing home residents receive Medicaid. Just SOME of the names by state are below:

Stumbled upon a great panel today @peoplesbooktakoma.com on racism and the prison system with Dr. Kris Marsh of UMD, Dr. Brittany Friedman @curlyprofessor.bsky.social, and Pulitzer Prize winner Toluse Olorunnipa while we were out feeling sad and buying more books to make us feel a little better.

Cuts draining federal government of technical expertise: Employee buyouts, terminations and uncertainty at multiple federal agencies are sparking warnings about an erosion of scientific and technical expertise at a crucial moment. Why it matters: No one country now dominates in every scientific…

@raskin.house.gov gives advice to fired federal workers: "Federal workers need to stay in very close touch with their unions and with the litigation that's going on, because we're wining in almost every case. In more than a dozen cases, there have been TROs and PIs issued against the Trump admin."

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

The Washpost, which is bleeding millions of dollars and shrinking its staff, accepted -- and then rejected -- a $115,000 ad that criticized Elon Musk. Anyway, here's the ad that the Post's business side didn't want its readers to see ⤵️ thehill.com/media/514849...

Is Mylie Cyrus in her Jane Fonda era? I never would have said they look alike but but now every time I see her, all I think of is Jane in her younger days.

Call their bluff. Tell the government DEI programs are fulfilling the ruling in Brown v Board of Education. Make them claim the affirmative action ruling supersedes Brown. Make them say they’re pro segregation. Make them show us the hoods and sheets.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

I've been asking this same question this week. Where is biotech & pharma as this Administration attacks NIH, CDC, & NSF. You need basic research to keep paying your stockholders, so the time to speak up is now, not after a generation of scientists is driven out of the game or the US.

To my friends and colleagues at UAB, IU, UF, FSU, UL, WashU, OSU, CWRU, etc, etc. Call both your senators and your representative. They listen. Emphasize the direct economic impact of NIH research, and the indirect impacts on pharmaceutical/biotech. Underscore its relevance to national security.

We can't be a global leader in research competitiveness if we're driving the upcoming generation out of science through deliberate chaos. And everyone will be hurt by this, not just the scientists, because the impacts will ripple through healthcare ultimately.

It is very easy to call your representatives’ offices. They have to log your calls and the call numbers are meaningful. You don’t even have to try to convince anyone; just call and tell them your concerns. They are there to represent you. Let them know what that means. www.usa.gov/elected-offi...

Two things concerned scientists can do: 1. Call your members of Congress and explain how disruptions in funding would be disastrous for jobs and research in their district/state. 2a. Call your dept. chair and express your concern. The goal is to end the convo w/…

Guys when Chris Rufo and Trump say "We're destroying DEI, we're salting the earth underneath it" and they're talking about regulations that reach back to 1965, they're not talking about corporate diversity trainings. They are talking about civil rights

Your biggest power is as a constituent who cares about the issue and may be directly or indirectly affected by them My format is generally: NIH is important for the nation, both in terms of health knowledge and economics/competitiveness 1/n

I had to preserve this line from an internal work email conversation because I'm fairly certain these words have never been uttered about me and likely never will be again! Happy Friday!
