Yay! @genomeofforrest.bsky.social work published today in PLoS Genetics. Forrest took a large maize common garden dataset and asked whether Environmental GWAS was actually useful for predicting which individuals would have highest fitness. Turns out, the answer is no. 1/2

This, 100% this. A key part of life is being able to look at an unfamiliar problem and *figure out how to solve it*. Maybe through tinkering or knowing how to find someone with *genuine* expertise to help, but the ability to say "okay, what do I need to do to figure this out" is valuable in itself!

Before the cops in LA started escalating things for no reason it was funny how my main takeaway was how much people were looking out for each other in really helpful ways. I’ve never seen so many people with carts giving away free water, sunscreen, snacks, and masks to total strangers.
