“Democrats can say what they want about me, but I would have absolutely called the shooter a Marxist and made tasteless digs at Gov. Walz had my loved ones recently been killed in cold blood,” said Mike Lee theonion.com/mike-le...

Yay! @genomeofforrest.bsky.social work published today in PLoS Genetics. Forrest took a large maize common garden dataset and asked whether Environmental GWAS was actually useful for predicting which individuals would have highest fitness. Turns out, the answer is no. 1/2

If you are enjoying #WalkingWithDinosaurs tonight on @pbs.org know that the public lands that many of these critters’ fossils come from in the US are under threat to be sold by our government. Call your Senators! #DinosaurPBS

Working with @wildcognition.bsky.social on this paper was so much fun: drawing from our research with mammals (primates & hyenas) we discuss to what extent the urban niche poses novel cognitive challenges or whether they are exapted to exploit urban resources link.springer.com/article/10.1...

McIver is arrested. Padilla is handcuffed. Hortman is assassinated. Lander is arrested. Meanwhile, Jeffries won’t blame Trump. Martin won’t blame Trump. And Schumer will demand an investigation by Trump.

Sneaky salmon? Gay frogs? Scientists studying animal behavior have long projected specific cultural norms and values onto animals — and that, Ambika Kamath and Melina Packer argue, can lead us badly astray. HEAT DEATH is proud to publish an extended excerpt of their new book, FEMINISM IN THE WILD!

More democratic senators are saying they haven't seen the part of the bill outlawing gender affirming care for trans people on medicaid/medicare. HERE'S A SCRIPT FOR YOU WITH SPECIFICS ON WHERE IT IS. Call your reps and point their eyeballs directly to SECTION 71117

the fact that armed, formally fascist party paramilitaries provide official security for the Oregon Republican Party has gone completely unremarked

This, 100% this. A key part of life is being able to look at an unfamiliar problem and *figure out how to solve it*. Maybe through tinkering or knowing how to find someone with *genuine* expertise to help, but the ability to say "okay, what do I need to do to figure this out" is valuable in itself!

Mr. Simon is categorically wrong when he says it is much harder to call out bad behavior one one's own side than on the side of the right. On the left, criticism is often practically invited--you get effuse apologies and promises to do better. On the right? You maybe get shot in your goddamn home.

in general I am done with the laser focus on Sarah McBride. the woman's terrified that any pushback will make the backlash worse, she's almost certainly drowning in harassment which won't help, and she's under one hell of a massive spotlight. freezing is not an ideal reaction but is understandable.

"But too often, we find ourselves pushed to the margins of our own movements by white “allies” who want to lead without listening, critique without context, and burn bridges in the name of ideological purity." They also get too busy policing us and what we're doing...IGNORING WHAT THEY ARE DOING

It is firmly in the “somebody’s making an active decision to downplay this” territory.

Before the cops in LA started escalating things for no reason it was funny how my main takeaway was how much people were looking out for each other in really helpful ways. I’ve never seen so many people with carts giving away free water, sunscreen, snacks, and masks to total strangers.

good work everyone

Austin.

You’re seeing a lot on TV rn about force and misconduct in Los Angeles sheriff department's role. Well, here’s what happened when someone tried to get serious about bringing accountability to the department: she faced huge pushback… and now she faces criminal charges. boltsmag.org/the-curious-...

Millions of people marched. Millions. We hear that number a lot, even billion, so it doesn't sound as big as it should. That's a *lot* of people. Do you know, say, 100 people? A million is ten thousand times that many. Want to count to a million one per second? It'll take 11 days. A lot of people.

It should not be lost on anyone that Minnesota Rep Melissa Hortman, who was shot to death in her home last night by an assassin, was a gun safety advocate who worked tirelessly to protect her constituents from gun violence.

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

The news isn’t being clear about this but to people hearing about these Minnesota shootings: Melissa Hortman is the Dem leader in the Minnesota House and was Speaker of the House 2019-2025. She’s probably the most influential state-level Democrat barring the governor.
