Settler anthropologist thinking about Coast Salish law, the Canadian state, and dismantling the colonial machine. Expect some music geekery, geopolitics, and a weird undercurrent of optimism despite the cynical sheen. This is a personal account.

@ianhanomansing.bsky.social This program is almost entirely dominated by Americans. The host, callers, guests. They DO NOT understand real impacts on Canadians. The anxiety. The economic damage. All of it. They are treating this as a kind of negotiation, without saying it’s an illegal threat.

Ian Hanomansing leading off hour two on Cross Country Checkup: We are absolutely not normalizing Canada as 51st state. Ian (literally 30 seconds later): So John, how would your life change if Canada were the 51st state? Today I learned that Ian doesn’t understand what “normalizing” means.

We also haven’t talked about the systematic squashing of human and civil rights and what that means for American influence to Canada. This conversation is just about feelings and only about capitalism

CBC is subject to the Access to Information Act in case you're curious about stuff

You know I love a good Venn Diagram. Been seeing this one around lately. Seems to sum up the times.

"People can do their fact-checking online after the program" is NOT HOW FACT CHECKING WORKS

An unmitigated disaster. @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social I truly hope there is a meaningful answer to your listeners about this. This is appalling. You're not only disappointing listeners, this is upsetting & quite frankly, frightening. How will you rebuild the trust you've completely broken here?

This is an unmitigated disaster. This has given the impression to God knows how many Americans to come on up, we'll just roll over for you. No discussion of international law violations, just opinions from would-be oppressors. #CrossCountryFuckUp

A fact I think that Canadians need to wrestle with is this: Is Canadian sovereignty up for debate is a question that is firmly closed for the vast majority of Canadians and firmly open for the vast majority of our institutional leaders.

Should we turn Czechoslovakia over to the Germans? We've set up a call-in on Czechoslovakian public radio which is open to Germans to talk about the pros and cons.

Maybe it's because I'm a survivor of domestic violence or maybe it's because I've spent my entire career working with other survivors but if you think Canadians going on the radio & begging Americans to see our humanity & not annex us is going to be effective, then I have a bridge I can sell you.

If you want to share your concerns with CBC about the “51st state” Cross-country Eff-up, I’m told the emails to use are [email protected] and [email protected] for the ombudsperson and editor in chief respectively

Should we "expect the same care" from Jeremy Hobson and NPR?

We kicked holocaust denier Ernst Zündel out of Canada. Why the hell would we let Elon Musk have any claim on Canada? He is a fascist threatening the people of Ukraine. I am proud to be helping drive this asshole from our shores. www.ctvnews.ca/canada/artic...

Donald Trump says Canada has no right to exist. I take the threat seriously. With our sovereignty on the table I support a national discussion on next steps. But CBC thinks it would be fun to have an American DJ co-host whether we should exist as a nation. Fuck that @ianhanomansing.bsky.social

I love the irony that @ianhanomansing.bsky.social has thus far insisted the show continue because of how important it is to hear people's voices -- today he's getting inundated with just that. I trust these voices are sufficient for him & the program's producers to re-evaluate & cancel the broadcast

Threads is on FIRE over @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social's decision to jointly air with US radio a "dialogue" about Canada becoming the 51st state tomorrow. I thought I must have been scrolling thru search results about CBC, but no, it was my regular feed. Everyone seems to be urging CBC to cancel it NOW

How naive. This makes me think of how people of colour and LGBTQ+ folks will say how racism, sexism, etc keeps them preoccupied with proving their humanity in the face of very real, material threats. Reminding US listeners Canadians are nice and we're all pals is not the way to pre-empt this threat.

I've spent the last few years defending CBC from Poilievre's "Defund the CBC" messaging but this? This is indefensible. Why don't people realize that "Just asking Qs" is playing into Trump's hand? When even the CBC is doing clickbait about Canada being invaded, we are in dire, dire straights.

This. Cross Country Checkup's broadcast is just as appropriate as hosting a joint US-Canada ep exploring the annexation of Washington. Honestly, did CBC ever entertain an episode on "Cascadia finally joining Canada: What does that mean for you?" And then taking over NPR airwaves for that "dialogue"?

There is still zero reason to let Americans call in on this. Should Radio Ukraine host a call in-show asking Russians what they think of Ukraine becoming the newest Oblast?

Something is shifting. They are still breaking things and stealing things. And they will keep trying to break and to steal. But the propaganda magic around the oligarchical coup is fading. (1/2)

If CBC were Polish, in 1935: "With Chancellor Hitler repeating his desire to annex Poland, we feel it is important to talk about. Even better, for Germans to hear our voices via Nazi SS radio that will be simulcasting." #cdnpoli #CBC #NPR

re: CBC Cross Country Check-up with @ianhanomansing.bsky.social scheduled for tomorrow.

Our national broadcaster asking Americans to ponder whether Canadian sovereignty should exist is not only dangerous but humiliating. I appreciate the willingness to change, but anything short of "Canada's sovereignty is not in question" is quite frankly embarrassing to Canadians and to CBC.

This is the kind of stuff that gives me hope.

I randomly jumped in at 1h 11min and I'm not sad about it. What a gem.

Poilievre keeps saying he's going to cut to "bring down inflation," but inflation has been at the target for over six months. It's currently below two percent. Nobody ever mentions this. #PnPCBC

Imagination is necessary for collective liberation. We can only create a better world if we imagine it first. Create. Dream. Wish. Do it out loud. As loud as possible. That’s how you find those who share your vision, who you can work with to change the world, to make the vision into reality.

In 2022 the Vancouver police lobby held a candidates' meeting. Sean Orr attended the meeting with a clear message: "Police out of politics." Ralph Kaisers kicked him out, then endorsed Ken Sim. If you agree police need to stay out of politics, elect Sean on April 5th. #vanpoli
