When my librarian friend reminds me “all libraries are free.” Just going to call mine a “Curated Cupboard of Free Books on the Curb”

Day 2 of painting while studying. It’s more “inspired by” because I am not ready to paint tiny people and my colors are a bit off. This is what you get for 30mins on a 2.5x2.5 canvas

Next up: @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social Turtles All the Way Down. My used copy came with this sticky note. I’m hoping I understand its importance by the end. My own little OCD detective tale.

What if I made a tiny painting for every day I study for comps? I will have a tiny “PhD pursuit museum”

Now that our weather has turned into the Devils armpit, it’s gardening at 6am, massive sweating by 8am and then a day at my desk.

Did something I had been dreading. What is anxiety the way it is?! Annoying. But proud of myself.

Continuing the “not assigned for my PhD work” reading—

A little self-care this morning: Moving my half-empty mug of coffee from yesterday off my desk so I don't accidentally drink from it.

24,525 is the number of edits on a single Word document that you can have before your computer stops saving anything. Ask me how I know.

As an editor I feel compelled to let you know it's "rights." You have amendment rights. Not writes. Or rites. Carry on.

The sex abuse panels at the Southern Baptist Convention, 2019 vs 2025

Got off the phone with the geneticist who explained how the testing works: "Genes are like books in an encyclopedic series. We are looking for typos or missing or extra pages. Your son has a few extra pages." --- Did they read my bio and think "I'm going to explain it with books"? Perfection.

I’m late to my own book club… well barely finishing the book before we meet in an hour. Wowzers. This was a good read. Excellent work @scottmcoley.bsky.social and props to @eerdmansbooks.bsky.social Can’t wait to hear what other readers thought. (I misplaced the dust jacket in St Louis 😆)

Last night, the ChurchToo community lost Jen Lyell. Right now all I feel is complete pity and sadness for anyone not utterly consumed with sorrow. Because you couldn’t have truly known her and feel anything less. It is a grief so deep that you are honored by it. So devastating that it’s beautiful.

“It’s just lines.” -my savant child

Ev is mad that I finished this in 2 sittings. She’s still on book 2 so now I have to wait. 😆

The kids have no idea how to appreciate this moment.

Out of office for the week.

We just crushed ADHD meds in an empty pill bottle because it’s the only small cup we can find for the 8yo. Not sus at all. #roadtrip

Leaving for a trip at 4am is ridiculous. But I heard an owl. That was nice

PhD friend: “I’m writing on this topic and have some cool insights.” Me: “I think I’ve read that perspective before.” Him: “You read the first draft of my paper last year.” — my mental filing cabinet is a dumpster

Completed another editing project. Fascinating read. The perspective on some of the NT narratives was unique. I had never read anything like it. So well done. And as this editing life goes, I don’t see any announcements yet by the authors or publishers about it so I have to be 🤐

Formatting errors is a typesetting issue, not a false citation excuse.

What in the Stranger Things is this? “It’s a houseplant,” the shop owner said.” Hell no, it’s not.

19 years and he's still my favorite person.

I cleaned my desk and office and this feels weird.

I’m at the coffee shop, hoping some good tea (liquid and proverbial) happens.

In times of maior economic shifts and financial uncertainty, we make intentional changes to the way we think about our finances and spend money. The ongoing friendship recession calls for the same sort of intentional shift toward approaching relationships differently in the light of new realities.

We have a winner! 🥳 (Check out the full ... very exciting... video of the drawing over on threads). @ruthmbuchanan.bsky.social

You think I’m kidding but this is how I’m labeling editing cycles of articles with Tolkien references.

I’ve been sick so you’re in luck! An extra day to enter to win my extra copy of Jonathan Strange!! Simple go and read/like this substack and I’ll draw a name this afternoon! @ruthmbuchanan.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/ruthbuch...

One of the authors I’ve been working with for a couple of months now might be the nicest person I’ve ever met. I’ve spent more hours on his manuscript than any others and never dread a single minute. Kindness is cool, y’all.

Do I have any St Louis people out there? I’m traveling with my kids to St. Louis the first week of June while Mr. Newton teaches a class. Tell me what I should do while I’m there. Where to eat. Etc.

I feel better since the storm chaser is also sick with the crud but we’re both having to stay tuned to tornado warnings. #MayinTexas @texasstormchasers.com

I feel like puddle.

Sometimes editing is knowing the rules and trusting the author's baseline info is correct. Other times I get the joy of saying, "I've actually read this book and I think your page numbers are wrong."

Huzzah! A Wheel of Time reference from the @www.jrrjokien.com !!! Still time to read&like&entertowin the substack post that features a booklist from @ruthmbuchanan.bsky.social and myself including Jordan’s epic Wheel of Time series. open.substack.com/pub/ruthbuch...

It must be the end of a semester because everyone is sick including me. 🫠
