fantasizing about a world where an opposition congress responds to trump’s attempts to usurp legislative power by defunding the entire white house staff

I was kinda hoping by the time they got to the sixth or seventh agency there would have been better security? Or at least a plan to keep these broccoli heads out?

There's a rally TODAY targeting LaHood if you're near IL-16

Lotta stuff you can urge federal Democrats to do right now that’s effective and useful, but the scale and impact of the constitutional crisis is so severe that they should be abusing parliamentary procedure to hold the floor in the House and the Senate until the coup ends. Waiting is dangerous.

So why isn't Congress running hearings about what DOGE is doing? The DOGE committee had a hearing - on fraud in welfare programs - that just echoes DOGE talking points.

I’m thinking about federal income tax. If the federal government isn’t meeting its obligations why should we? Specifically, I’d love to see states get the money first and hold it in trust pending litigation. I want to pay my taxes but not to a government that doesn’t respect the constitution.

I'm not seeing anybody talking about this yet but it's terrifying on several fronts. National Archives head resigns as Trump takes control of records www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

They could stream on YouTube every evening at the same time. People would know that there was a daily recap and tune in when they could.

Yes, we let a rich idiot nobody elected destroy the entire government, but it was that or make rich people pay taxes so that poor people could go to the doctor

The position I'd like to see House and Senate Democrats take is pretty simple: We refuse to cooperate with Republicans on anything until they stop breaking the law and trashing the Constitution. We want Musk out, DOGE dissolved, and the Trump administration complying with federal court orders.

The passive authoritarian tense

looking forward to the many press conferences during the next pandemic where we’ll be forced to listen to someone who sounds like pennies in a garbage disposal and looks like fried chicken skin telling us how to stay healthy

The year is 2026 A.D. Jimmy Fallon just ate the last egg cooked by Gordon Ramsey in a Amazon sponsored TV special. It’s day 37 of martial law. Dem politicians keep txting you begging to sign up for X, the everything app, only legal way to donate to midterm camapigns (subject to 69% processing fee).

A classic authoritarian move is to go after judges. I honestly did not think we would see it in the US because the system is already so politicized and Trump has a 6-3 majority. But here we are.

So happy for the Eagles and my city and Kendrick was amazing but the meaningless platitudes of the ads and the reassurance that the private sector would solve all our problems felt especially dystopian in this moment.

Tesla paid $0 in federal income tax last year. 2022: $0 2021: $0 2020: $0 2019: $0 2018: $0 Tesla reported $6.7 billion in profit in those years.

It’s a hard time to be someone who catastrophizes.

Scientists and journalists need to figure out right quick how to explain to the average person how a massive change in research indirects will impact the medical care they and their children get (eg at the local children’s hospital), the education their children will get, the price of tuition, etc.

the end result of all of this will be the end of America as a leader in research and a destination for the world’s best and brightest ours will migrate overseas instead and take their talents with them a totally unnecessary self-inflicted wound gutting one of the best things about this country

Now more than ever.

I know you politics knowers get this, but I don't think most Americans do. They're ending the American tradition of democratic representation and acting like one election ended the right of the opposition to exist anywhere. They're ruling as a single party & will push fascism until they're stopped.

Wondering where the capitol police are in all of this.

Bird flu cases are rising nationwide, including in Virginia. VA’s Democratic congressional delegation is demanding the immediate reinstatement of CDC disease reports after the Trump admin paused communications. #BirdFlu virginiamercury.com/2025/02/06/v...

Defund this motherfucker. He should stand on his own.

Musk is the living embodiment of AI: a broken, tech-bro tool that inserts itself into everyone's life unsolicited and makes everything worse.

Again, another day has gone by & the presidents of major research universities are deafeningly silent in the face of existential threats because of the potential end of federal funding. It's like watching the failure to stand up to Scott Walker & the Wisconsin GOP for a decade, on a national scale.

Five Things Dems Must Do to Fight Trump Now open.substack.com/pub/thebulwa... by the much-missed Tom Malinowski.

Republicans ran into the room to SHEILD Elon Musk from having to come and speak to Congress. They want their billionaire takeover done behind closed doors. The people deserve transparency. No one elected Elon Musk.

It’s a shame they turned universities into landlords & pharmaceutical companies, cuz it would be nice if institutions devoted to learning might speak up about the value of knowledge in a time when 22-year-old edgelords from 4chan have been given carte blanche to erase data from every federal agency

And once he complies they should issue the exact same ultimatum about something else. They need to treat his presidency as illegitimate, which is what it is.

It's a coup. The actions being taken are complex, premeditated, have Orbán's fingerprints all over it, and we are going to lose our Republic if a broad, multi-ideological coalition to resist it is not quickly assembled.

I think the big disconnect with the “let’s find common ground” pablum is we’re not seeing conservatives doing conservative things, we’re seeing literal Nazis doing literal Nazi things.

I think countries around the world should levy tariffs specifically on Tesla in response to US tariffs, as well as banning Twitter as a national security threat driving a wedge between our co-dictators may be the most effective thing they can do

The National Transportation Safety Board telling media they can only receive updates via the government-aligned website of the oligarch who is running the administration. The government helping to make X relevant is one of a myriad of ways Musk's public role boosts his private businesses.

what Musk is doing is as close to the government being taken over by a hostile foreign power in our lifetimes, the coverage should reflect that

Dems should not allow anything to move in the House or Senate until this is dealt with. Dem have the power in both chambers to jam up the works, and they need to use it. That isn't a radical tactic, it's what the GOP has done for years for trivial matters. Unlike this, which is catastrophic.
