I don't know how people take U.S. senators seriously. Chris Hedges calls them "mandarins," which is pretty accurate. I see them as heralds of the oligarchs, like an elite band of Silver Surfers, doing nothing but trying to soften the blows of criminality/unnecessary austerity for the stupid masses.
