OH: You can’t cut your way to excellence.

When is "move fast and break things" a valid strategy? When is it idiotic and/or unethical? Discuss.

It's here! "We Just Build Hammers: Stories from the Past, Present, and Future of Responsible Tech" brings to life tales of the unsung heroes of responsible tech and the science fiction that inspired them. thehammerbook.com #TechJustice #EthicalSource #ResponsibleTech #TechEthics #TheFutureIsSoft

The savings from cutting labor costs shows up right away. The costs of cutting ppl doesn't show up right away. Neither do the savings from actually fixing things. #ShortTermThinking #PerversIncentives

Hi all! I have a new post up on my Embracing Agility blog called Medicinal Positivity. Rather than complaining about the world, I decided to write about something positive, which is what I've experienced over 35+ years in software delivery that works. open.substack.com/pub/daveroon...

You can’t judge people only by how they treat you. The true test of character is how they treat those they don't like or need. Even if someone is kind to you, proceed with caution if they’re consistently unkind to others. Selective civility is a sign of deep-seated hostility.

At this point in my product journey, I’m pretty sure I’ve got more questions than answers. Less about what’s the best framework for blah, blah, blah. More about how do you work effectively with folks who don’t see eye to eye with you.

Its weird how people act as if growth is always desirable But unrestrained growth allows invasive species to destroy ecosystems, Unrestrained growth is a core component of many cancers. Consider “enough” instead of always “more”

Resisting leadership fads is profound act of leadership.

OH: We're working in such tiny steps that you didn't even see our change happen. #ci

Too many software companies incentivise developers to care more about their performance reviews than their performance.

When building software, Plan Half of what you expect to be able to accomplish. This works regardless of whether you are planning a day, a week, a quarter or years.

Do it. For freedom.

Many problems come back time after time, no matter what you try. Often, this happens because the fix doesn’t address what holds the pattern in place. Francis Lacoste and I are offering The Art of System Observation, 11/19&20. Early bird rate thru 10/20/24. More information and registration here:

When considering why programmers aren’t unit testing effectively, it is easy assume the problem is programmers don’t know how to test. But more often, I find the problem is programmers don’t know how to unit.

Many ppl think working hard = long hours + heroic effort.
Great teams aren’t like that.
They keep a sustainable pace.
Their work looks effortless.
They look like they’re having fun.

Do you want to learn to create the conditions for teams like these? #PSL www.congruentchange.com/problem-solv...

I wish ppl would stop using the expression "hold their feet to the fire," when they want someone to do something. Holding someone feet to the fire was a torture technique used to extract confessions. If you apply enough pressure, someone might agree, but at best you'll get compliance.

The late Edgar Schein once asked some of his students what it meant to be promoted to #mgmt. “They said without hesitation, ‘It means I can now tell others what to do.’” This is a common & great misapprehension about how to get things done (even when you are in charge).
