Hahaaaahhhhhhh. Now that’s funny.

This is a great action list for those facing NSF terminations. I would add one key point: Be in touch with legal counsel at your institutions and universities. There is a lot to dispute in these terminations.

Exactly right - NSF terminations of grants like these are assaults on free speech and access to information - ie, truth. Legally, NSF has to provide an appeals process, follow the law, and update agency priorities using normal procedures like issuing new regs/guidance - not posting on a website.

Exactly right. Federal regs in 2 CFR 200.342 require agencies to “provide [a terminated grantee] with an opportunity to object and provide information challenging the action.”

The Deep Sea should not be mined. We have a glut of nickel/ cobalt, and the amazing life there should not be destroyed. Morally - we should conserve nature/species, and it’s required legally under the ESA. The US should also join the Int’l Seabed Authority… why do I even need to say this shit!!!

Wikipedia is under threat for providing access to the truth. That’s a First Amendment violation. So titans are attacking free speech to mute reality - make no mistake, this is what you get in the capitalist casino. If we had stronger tax laws for the rich, stronger rule of law, this wouldn’t happen.

This is really great advice for awardees of NEH as well.

NSF is starting more terminations. I want to know — on what basis are they ending grants for DEI and climate, given improving participation for “women” and “underrepresented groups” is mandated in the America COMPETES Act.

This is too accurate to be funny. PhD students who are not citizens should be extra cautious and in touch with their universities right now.

All props to Harvard for what they're doing, but I've been at LSU, Virginia Tech, and UIC the last 10 days. They're definitely doing the work - such inspiration. People need to get out of Cambridge and go to Blacksburg and Baton Rouge if you want some hope. news.vt.edu/articles/202...

Earth is so pretty.

Critical work by @theatlantic.com to remind us all to speak out - “The truth is, checks and balances work only when individuals are courageous enough to speak out. Many American citizens, though, have been conspicuously quiet in the early days of Trump’s second term.”

Great new piece by @katrinamillerphd.bsky.social in the @nytimes.com today suggesting that these NSF terminations are probably unlawful. I would agree. Researchers can talk with their unis and get more information in the AAUP on this: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

Happy Earth Day everyone 🌎🌳❤️ Suffice to say, it’s easy to lose track of the climate crisis and the extinction crisis and the animal suffering crisis, given the barbaric stuff going on. But they are not going away. They are getting worse every day we have to fight this rearguard action.

Wowwwwww. Looks like DJT beat Jesus to the punch today — he is risen, at 5:46 am, indeed. Would that we lived in a more mature, adult, civil, kind, decent, dignified, sunny age. Thanks to social media and sociopaths, the new SS, we have this instead.

Many don’t know, but it’s true: Male chicks are ground up in a meat grinder at 1 day old, because the egg industry doesn’t want them, by the billions. There is now in ovo tech to sex them before they’re born and have to face that fate. Egg companies need to use it. Purchase in ovo sexed eggs. 🐣

NSF terminations have now started. This guide from AAUP is going to be important for awardees to review. If your grant was terminated, it’s important to be aware that the usual dispute resolution process at NSF requires you and your institution to SUBMIT A DISPUTE LETTER within 30 days. /1

I want to share the great thread from @davidimiller.bsky.social here on NSF termination. If you were terminated, there are legal recourses but it’s important to work with your research office, they’ll play point. Further info in the guide I recently published w AAUP: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

For NSF awardees who were recently terminated: I would highly recommend solidarity by submitting your information here. This will make it a lot easier for collective responses. For further info, check out the NSF guide I published with AAUP a couple of weeks ago: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

NSF grantees and awardees can learn from a *new report* how they might respond to grant changes like termination! 🔬 Like @davidimiller.bsky.social says, prepare now. I helped edit this with the amazing @isaackamola.bsky.social at AAUP and other great colleagues. Posted w/ other CDAF resources here:

As I’ve said before, “biglaw” has become mostly a profit seeking venture that pits firms against each other for the biggest clients. @nytimes.com confirms today. Stand together, or fall apart. Young lawyers should ask: what do I believe in doing? Not: where can I make the most money possible?

Thou shalt march on Washington by the millions and not leave until the Mad King is deposed.

That’s a win.

Repost. This is NOT about antisemitism. Reporters should not be obligated to parrot propaganda. Universities are being targeted because they are always targeted first - as centers of free thought and speech!!

This is good news. But reporters, please stop just repeating that this task force has anything to do with stopping antisemitism. It is about closing universities and about fomenting antisemitism. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Bring it. @harvard.edu

Time for a general strike.

Exactly - This should have happened already.

As an alum, this is exactly what we want to see from @harvard.edu . Proud to see it today! I think a lot of us have been watching and hoping major universities will push back against clearly unconstitutional free speech violations. This is a great sign, a bit of good news.

I don’t think anyone should have to make excuses for why this is one of the most important issues of our time. 300 million cattle and 80 billion chickens suffer terribly every year bc of factory farming. Ofc The NY Times should be publishing on this. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/12/o...

Eliminate factory farms. Battery cages cause bird flu transmission. Stopping factory farming and ending big ag conglomeration is necessary to prevent pandemic conditions. We need to stop kidding ourselves that we don’t need to end factory farming. Plant based diets should be in every school.

So who is going to investigate w Schiff for the biggest insider trading in history? Clearly there’s market manipulation if Trump tells people to buy. And how do we know he didn’t enact the tariffs to buy. Impeachment / removal should be on the table for sure. Endless. Corruption.

A general strike is a good idea; we are at that stage of the game. Political pressure can include this kind of action when impacts are widespread enough.

My new paper on "Animal Rights Before Legal Personhood" is recently out in the Cornell Law Review! This paper explores how rights in law probably have to precede "personhood," as the result in the Happy the elephant case shows us. Check it out if you're interested in animal legal protections.
