NEW: Judge Boasberg finds probable cause to hold the Trump administration in contempt for their decision not to turn the planes around on March 15. He orders them either to fix their mistake or identify who made those decisions (presumably for further sanctions).

Nothing is more emblematic of the Trump Administration's approach to trade policy than this. Two weeks after "Liberation Day", with a trade war on China raging, they are only now ordering an investigation of what rare earths the US imports, from whom, and why. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

The year is 2038. Texas has just completed its third nuclear strike against Oklahoma. In Washington, Elon Musk's Legion Of Children is engaged in a last stand in the DOGE basement. In London, the Conservatives warn that an agreement to sell cheese to France is putting at risk a US trade deal.

Good analysis on ⁦‪this week's MotE pod‬⁩ about the controversial (BBC-instigated) decision to force Malta to change its lyrics because a Maltese word sounds like the c-word in English, while Finland's much-more-sexually-explicit song is OK because it's not in English.

I remember when the US ran a tourism slogan 'What are you waiting for, an invitation from the President?'. Clearly needs to be re-tooled as 'What are you waiting for, a threat from the Secretary of State?'

“As you can see, Birmingham is an up-and-coming city with a thriving street food scene” From the new Private Eye, in shops now.

Petrol prices have been falling in recent weeks, and there's more of this to come. Brent crude is down more than 10 per cent since President Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariff announcements.

No HS2, 50% rise in bus fares, and the Great British Driver gets another treat. This is maybe the dumbest, pettiest thing I've seen yet. Why are they like this?

Extraordinary that it has come to this

Your regular reminder that Republicans in Congress could put a stop to much/all of this any time they wanted. They are enabling authoritarian government.

This is Europe's fault

Yes Liz. Do it. This'll be the comedy event of the summer.

Just watched the Home Counties private schoolboy Nigel Farage telling northern voters how he understands steelworkers because he used to work in the “metals business” himself. He was, ahem, a commodities trader at the London Metal Exchange in the City.

Trump is defying a Supreme Court judgement to return a man wrongfully deported to a foreign prison without any due process. This. Is. A. Constitutional. Crisis. Not that you would know from today’s front pages. Most suggest it’s all El Salvador’s fault. A colossal failure of mainstream media.

The Executive Branch violated a court order that had nothing to do with "foreign policy". It's that simple. End of story.

It's not that China is inherently the stronger or more resilient economy. China has been preparing for an economic showdown with the US for 10 years. Meanwhile, the US government didn't know what it's opening salvo would be two hours before Trump fired it.

Attempting to compile data on bus fares & concessions across England in 2025 and this council webpage captures how frustrating & time consuming it is… “We're sorry that we cannot give detailed fares information. Fares are set by the bus companies, and they can change at any time without notice.”

EU and Canada warning about travel to the US I wonder if the UK is doing the same, or still in 'special relationship' mode 🤷‍♂️

What's the price of self-respect? A question for the age.

Edinburgh has had “tap on” buses for several years, great to have the trams now included. The challenge seems to be the additional ticket cost of using the tram to/from the airport.
