Wondering how to process last weekend's election results in Germany? We were too... Thankfully @tabouchadi.bsky.social and @emiliaroig.bsky.social very kindly agreed to share their thoughts with us.

It was great to be on The Europeans podcast to talk about the German election, Friedrich Merz, the normalization of the AfD and what to expect for the future.

🚨NEW EPISODE 🚨 In this German election special, we ring up @tabouchadi.bsky.social to unpack the results & speak to @emiliaroig.bsky.social about what it feels like to live in Germany right now — and how to think about the fightback. www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

This is an incredible story, I hope Albert gets the very belated compensation he deserves (and a reminder to the people who apparently need it that the Nazis were not the good guys!)

The impact of Trump's destruction of USAID. The Serbian regime uses it as an excuse to crack down on critical NGOs that received USAID funds. www.nedeljnik.rs/tuzilastvo-p...

„Die Quote schadet ja in aller erster Linie den Frauen selbst.“

Wow! DIe Linke does much better than expected, while both CDU and AfD fall below symbolically important 30% and 20%, respectively. FDP might still make it, BSW less likely. Grand Coalition is possible but narrow margins... #BTW25 #GermanElection

3 days until Germany votes. While much attention has been on Friedrich Merz who is all but guaranteed to become the next chancellor, the fate of Germany’s incoming government hinges on three small parties fighting to enter parliament. Here is what fellow Europeans should watch out for on Sunday:

NEW EPISODE 🚨 This week, the great transatlantic break-up. How can we make sense of the seismic shift in Europe's relationship with the US since Trump took power? What does it mean for Ukraine, and Europe's ability to defend itself from Russia? www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

EU overhaul of farming strategy ignores vital green proposals, campaigners warn

Close to the German election, I learn more about what people in my social environment think electorally. This round, I have not met a single person who would even consider voting SPD. "My parents maybe" has been the closest to hearing someone supporting them. This is of course anecdotal, but ... 1/

It seems that I am reading Russian propaganda, but unfortunately, no - these are the words of the President of the United States, who is supposed to represent democracy. Instead of decisively stopping Russia and its war crimes, he actually helps the aggressor by his actions.

🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨 Nocturnal tourism is supposedly one of the big travel trends of 2025, and from star-gazing to truffle-hunting, there are plenty of places in Europe to do it. But where is this craving for darkness coming from? www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

Closing your curtains at dusk improves insect -, plant -, bat - and hedgehog life in your garden or immediate surroundings, because it keeps your house lights from shining out. And it's energy efficient and cosy. Who knew!! @europeanspod.bsky.social open.spotify.com/episode/3KpJ...

Austrian far-right leader Herbert Kickl is giving up his chance to form a new coalition government in Vienna after negotiations with the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) broke down.

So the coalition (led by a man, our current mayor) that governed Reykjavík just imploded last week. The parties headed by these five women are currently in talks about forming a new coalition. They are all left leaning, so I think it's a safe bet that Reykjavík will have a left female mayor soon!

This weekend, we'll see a landmark moment unfolding in the Baltics, as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania decouple their shared power grid from Russia and hook it up to Europe's. A decades-long plan finally realised. Undoubtedly accelerated by Putin's warmongering. Have a listen below for more:

🚨 NEW EPISODE 🚨 Europe's rarest butterfly lives on the outskirts of a single town in North Macedonia. So why is it possible to find specimens of this incredibly endangered animal for sale online for 30 euros? www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

Quite the marmalade-dropper, this: 3 weeks before Germany's election, Angela Merkel has issued a statement criticising her own party for enabling ("with open eyes") a majority with the AfD. Effectively accuses Merz of breaking his pledge not to do so. www.buero-bundeskanzlerin-ad.de/erklaerungen...

🧵 1. Great that @europeanspod.bsky.social featured the plight of the Macedonian Grayling butterfly in their latest podcast. This highlighted the serious loophole in EU wildlife trade regulations, which still allows ‘stolen wildlife’ to be legally traded in the EU. open.spotify.com/episode/3Ame...

📰📺📻🇵🇱 Extremely important call from friends at Article 19 and Polish NGOs/journalist associations for the new and improved pro-rule of law/human rights government to go beyond implementing the anti-SLAPP EU directive and finally get rid of art. 212 of Polish criminal code - the crime of defamation.

EU-27 leaders find it easier to agree on building a 250-million new Headquarter for FRONTEX than on the rules governing EU migration policy. Of course they will then blame the EU, as if wasn’t their expression euobserver.com/migration/ar...

It was about time we interviewed a drag cow on the podcast. Don’t miss this week’s interview with Daniel Hellmann, the Swiss artist and animal rights campaigner behind Soya the Cow, making the case for joyful activism

Things learnt today. Belgian national broadcaster RTBF airs Trump's rantings with a time delay in order to ensure they do not contravene the country's laws against hate speech. Vive la Belgique.

This afternoon, CDU Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz gave a keynote speech on foreign and EU policy at @koerberip.bsky.social. A thread on his main points on the EU and Germany's role in it:

It’s January 23 and I’m pretty sure this is the best interview I’m going to do this year. Not all activism can be fun / funny. But the human spirit can’t take endless doom and gloom. Why wouldn’t we welcome more activism that campaigns about something serious in a way that’s joyful and ridiculous?

In times like these, it’s formats like this that keep my spirit up. ❤️ Huge thanks to The Europeans Podcast for being informative, funny, adorable, and a much-needed safe haven!

Very fun interview with a drag cow this week, touching on everything from human-cow weddings to joyful activism. Don't miss this one!

Er, what the fuck, France?? The court in Versailles had ruling against her, saying the wife's refusal to have sex with her husband "constitutes a serious and renewed violation of the duties and obligations of marriage making intolerable the maintenance of a shared life".

NEW EPISODE 🚨 In an otherwise miserable week, this podcast is delighted to bring you a joyful interview with a drag cow. At least, an interview with the person behind the cow: the Swiss artist, performer and animal rights activist Daniel Hellmann. Enjoy! 🐄 www.europeanspodcast.com/all-episodes...

BREAKING: A Dutch court has just ruled in @greenpeace.nl's favour in a crucial case about protecting nature. According to the judge, the government has not done enough to reach the nitrogen targets. The government must reach their 2030 targets and otherwise will have to pay Greenpeace €10 million.
