Many areas of the west are without news outlets. The Coeur d’Alene/Spokane area is not one of them. Follow stellar reporting by local people, I’m begging of you.

Lightning sparked wildfires in the Northwest Territories: "…including one wildfire – named EV014 – some 40 km north of Inuvik, about as far north on the territorial mainland as such a fire has ever been recorded." #ntwx #Canada #Wildfire2025 cabinradio.ca/245848/news/...

Firefighters ambushed by gunman in Idaho while responding to brush fire

Last night, walking my dog past a basketball court, some teen boys playing, I heard one of them compare his buddy to Angel Reese. Another kid: "How is he Angel Reese?" First kid: "Did you see him get all the points?" Third kid: "Isn't Angel Reese bad?" And another: "She only scores on the rebound."

What are they doing, like, JIM HENSON'S BOND BABIES?

An awful truth underlying this awful story: if he's going to threaten to stab people at his tween daughter's soccer game, his daughter probably isn't safe at home, either.

Tens of thousands defy Hungary’s ban on Pride in protest against Orbán

An update on this: because of the fire situation in Dawson City, the race has been shortened to end in Carmacks - 300km instead of 715. The winners may take less than 24 hours to cover that! They just hit Lake Laberge, the first major obstacle. Follow along!

Need something low-stakes but exciting to think about? Can I invite you to follow along with this year's 25th running of the Yukon River Quest, the world's longest annual paddling race? 715 kms / 444 miles of river from Whitehorse to Dawson City. The tracker goes live tomorrow morning @ 9am PT.

Numerous fires burning around Interior Alaska showed little growth as rain and clouds coincided with the arrival of new crews and management teams, some from the Lower 48.

Some mammal drama on my Haines Road Breeding Bird Survey this a.m... at Stop 24 (along Clear Creek) a mom and calf moose crashed out of the bushes as I was parking the car, and about 40 seconds later (as I was counting Fox Sparrows) a Grizzly blasted out in hot pursuit! Bird counting delayed... #BBS

I have a mountain of work to do, but when I come up for air I'll be reading this 👀

Race organizers said the race is capped at 1,200 people, and that most years, it sells out in about two weeks. This time around, that didn’t happen. (From KHNS - Haines)

The Juneau Independent, a new web-based newsroom, launched Friday with a mission to offer a newspaper that is locally owned and operated. “I’m very confident this can do well the way it is,” said its founder, former Juneau Empire editor Mark Sabbatini.

The view from tonight’s road ride:

The tl;dr here is we have a lot of fire and not a lot of roads. If you know anyone traveling in/through the territory right now, tell them to check 511 early and often.

Alaska-Yukon travelers, the Dempster Highway is now also closed by fire from kms 0-65. Pilot cars are escorting cars through the adjacent closure on the North Klondike, last I heard. Top of the World is (tenuously) open. Robert Campbell Hwy is closed east of Ross, Aishihik Rd is closed. Check 511! 😅

Latest update on the Dawson City-area fires, and their attendant issues (highway closures, ferries, fuel, etc.):

This is a big improvement over yesterday afternoon when both roads out of Dawson were closed! If I were a visitor there this weekend, I might try to take the opportunity to clear out now to give the locals more elbow room to manage these fires and their accompanying evacuation alerts...

Dawson City road updates: The Top of the World Highway opened last night and remains open so far, though fire conditions could close it again as the day heats up. The North Klondike Highway is still closed but pilot cars are running this morning to get people through while they're able. 511yukon.ca

Yikes. Dawson folks, find more details and recommendations here: www.iqair.com/ca/canada/yu...

Alaska and Yukon Territory PM 2.5 air quality early Sunday AM. Worst reported AQI in Fairbanks, AK area and the Dawson, YT area, where fires also intermittently closing highways. Smoke from the many fires in Interior Alaska still staying north of the Alaska Range. #akwx #ytwx #Smoke #Summer2025
