I should not have gone straight from Road to Dallas to this. Mind palace reaching Taj Mahal levels

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Some pretty stunning answers here from DHS Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar in today's interview with NPR's Michel Martin, in which Edgar equates pro-Palestinian protests with terrorist activity and can't point to any crime committed by Mahmoud Khalil: npr.org/2025/03/13/n...

New declaration by Khalil's attorney says she filed his habeas petition while he was still held in NYC, but that federal authorities moved him to New Jersey within around 12 hours of his Saturday night arrest and moved him to Louisiana by midday Sunday: documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Judge Furman of the Southern District of New York has ordered that detained Columbia University protest organizer Mahmoud Khalil not be deported and that all parties meet in court on Wednesday in response to Khalil's habeas petition, filed yesterday:

Trump signals the beginning of a new campus crackdown, promising "many" more arrests of students "across the country" who protested for Palestine or against Israel's war in Gaza

ICYMI: In February, we reported that some members of the Columbia Alumni for Israel Whatsapp group leapt at the chance to get young people they claim are “supporters of Hamas” detained and deported.

Mahmoud Khalil is being held in an ICE facility in Jena, Louisiana, according to ICE’s Detainee Locator webpage. Thank you to @petrulis.bsky.social for flagging this. locator.ice.gov/odls/#/search

Schlock and Awe returns with a new ep as @jscros.bsky.social and I are joined by @inthesedeserts.bsky.social to discuss Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Ang Lee's weird and uncanny 2016 film about an Army unit sent back from Iraq for a propaganda tour schlockandawe.substack.com/p/billy-lynn...

New Severance suggests that if your boss asks you to RTO you should try to kill them

In modern history, what is the least popular that party leaders have ever been to their OWN voters? Second place was the GOP in 2009, where their net approval with Republican voters was only +6. Currently Dems are -8, shattering all previous records.

57% of Americans, including 61% of independents, say Trump has exceeded his authority in new Washington Post-Ipsos poll that also finds a plurality oppose what Trump has done in his first month: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

The Musk-backed dark money group Building America's Future has begun buying more than $670,000 worth of TV time in Wisconsin, part of Musk's effort to end the state supreme court's brief liberal majority in the April 1 election: www.jsonline.com/story/news/p...

The CIA has stepped up covert drone flights that began under Biden and go "well into sovereign Mexico," the NYT reports. Suggests discussion of pros and cons of strikes on fentanyl labs has been discussed. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

There was a moment during the first night when Trump was signing dozens of EOs where he got handed one and told what it was and did a little eyebrow raise/shrug like a guy who ordered steak getting fajitas instead but deciding that sounded good too

pretty sure the media's been reporting this 24/7 e.g. www.reuters.com/world/us/sta... etc etc

I think we'll see about this. The natsec priesthood and the American desire for global dominance have been mostly undefeated since WWII. But it is kinda of a counterpoint to the Trump-era left/progressive drive for more democratic input into foreign policy.

Trump admin through 1 week: - Pauses all federal grants & loans - Purges Justice Department career staff, halts civil rights cases - Purges at least 15 inspectors general - Suspends USAID staff while halting foreign aid - Threatens Colombia, Denmark, Mexico, Canada & many more w/ tariffs & sanctions

DHS is granting immigration-enforcement authority to several agencies at the Justice Department, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Marshals Service. www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

My colleagues @jonswaine.bsky.social and @ellenwapo.bsky.social have uncovered new details about Tulsi Gabbard's visit with Assad in 2017, including apparent efforts by her staff to finesse the facts and limit the damage [gift link]: wapo.st/4gTJ3Tb

The best feeling I've ever had opening a social app

Who knows if these anecdotes are entirely true but it's interesting to reflect on the difference between how a foreign policy perma-elite (cycling between govt and think tank) must deal with partners who they will likely see again and again vs. independently wealthy non-experts who don't give a shit

Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal has been reached, per my colleague @johnphudson.bsky.social: x.com/John_Hudson/.... Qatar will be making an announcement soon.

Two great back to back pieces from my investigative colleagues at The Post, exploring the origins of the Palisades Fire (www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2025...) and how security lapses in New Orleans allowed for the New Year's Eve ramming attack (www.washingtonpost.com/investigatio...)

NEW: The staff of the Athletic has signed union cards and today petitioned NYT management to join the Times Guild www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2025/...

Israel is cutting a new corridor through northern Gaza, wiping Palestinian towns off the map, forcibly displacing nearly the whole population, and fortifying military positions in what many fear is a plan for long-term control. Our latest investigation [gift link]: wapo.st/4gFoSrO

This is how @UNOCHA describes what the Israeli military is doing to one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza. From the latest update: reliefweb.int/report/occup...

Great primer on the actors at play in post-Assad Syria from @akmckeever.bsky.social: akmckeever.substack.com/p/post-asad-...

Assad has left Syria x.com/timourazhari...

Assad regime forces apparently collapsing in the south (Daraa/Suwayda), rebels advancing on Homs and threatening the regime's connection to Latakia, now Erdogan effectively endorsing an offensive all the way to Damascus. Everything moving much faster than expected www.reuters.com/world/middle...

Excellent initial visual timeline of the UnitedHealth assassin's movements by my colleagues Jarrett Ley and Sam Oakford. More to come soon: www.washingtonpost.com/investigatio...

Happy Thanksgiving from the Post Guild. This week, as always, we’re thankful for remote work flexibility. Here are just some of the reasons why 🧵

My wife was giggling at something while I was brushing my teeth and by the time I came out and asked what it was she was lying in darkness and said "the time of phones is over, the time of sleep has begun"
