11th grade NAEP testing canceled. www.the74million.org/article/afte...

What kind of research was cancelled by Dept of Ed? Bread & butter work to improve kids' achievement & lives: 🚸Enhancing math & writing instruction 🚸Helping kids w disabilities transition after HS 🚸Reducing teacher shortages

The Doge Musketeers have frozen millions in IES (Institute of Education Sciences) funding that fuels educational research into effective teaching and learning. IES has been particularly crucial in developing the Science of Reading (SOR). Tell your reps: hands off IES!

If there's one thing I think we can say with certainty after the past four weeks: AI is not better at running the government than people are.

My sister, who is a social worker, just said they can no longer draw down funds used to pay foster parents. So glad we're getting to the root of the waste, fraud and abuse.

If the country is founded on rule of law, one actually cannot save it by breaking the law. In so doing, you render the "Country" meaningless.

DoEd says teachers don’t use IES research. I absolutely do! It’s made me a better teacher, and I regularly recommend the practice guides to teachers seeking help.

The WWC is not just a website; it was a promise: a promise that we could do better for our kids by understanding what actually works. Its absence will leave a void that will be deeply felt.

Elmo plans to cut the research arm of DoE. Who needs research into what works for students, particularly given the recent NAEP results?!? 🤷‍♀️ www.nytimes.com/2025/02/11/u...

We need journalists to connect all the moral dots in this death regime- from starving and ill babies no longer cared for by USAID, to cancer research stalled, to cutting off support for DV victims, to deleting web pages for LGBTQ kids to get help. The government purge is killing people. 1/2

Every time Republicans call this an "audit," journos need to call bs. These aren't accountants!

I've typed and deleted many comments about this, but I think the thing I want to say is: I'm furious, I'm heartbroken, and I want our trans kids to live. Just let kids live. What if we oriented our politics around kids -- all kids, everywhere -- staying alive? I think that would be good.

This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake web.archive.org/web/20231206...

At least we're going into week 3 with a Beyonce album of the year win.

I think a lot of people have mutual aid confused with charity on here, maybe because folks most often see it in the context of fundraiser asks (which are great!). I want to talk a little about what it looks like in everyday life. Because we need it more than ever. Government is getting shredded.

My nephew on lead guitar, with Automatic Shoes. Love it every time he plays this solo.

There's a lot going on right now, but one thing worrying me is that the people who will be running government agencies don't know what they're doing. Seems like foreign adversaries must be feeling pretty stoked.

Local groups already support disaster relief. After Hurricane Harvey, the community dev org I worked for put together the largest shelter in Houston, with $$ from feds. Our people did all the work, tho. Trump VISITED. Does he... not remember?

If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful towards the powerless, then you have profoundly misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

More Democrats need to speak like this. Those that do will be rewarded. It will take a while for the current establishment base and donors to realize it and we're going to lose them and that's good for the long term health of the country. Let them go. Dead weight bringing us down.

Of course there should be an evaluation of preparedness for the LA fires, but much of this finger pointing serves to comfort ourselves that we are in control. We never have been, when it comes to nature. But certainly not now, in this age of climate change-furled extreme weather. (1/2)

Inspired by a Christmas party encounter, I wrote about what I'm seeing as the "science of reading" movement grows up. www.evidentlyreading.com/instructiona...

Love this piece - not only when it comes to ed journalism, but political as well. When "both sides" are not equally credible, it does a disservice to report their opinions as equally weighted.
