This can't be stated enough: Off-loading the Education Department's work to other departments basically means throwing away years of institutional knowledge and skill that will have to be rebuilt. It's a ridiculous waste of taxpayer funds.

Two noteworthy things about the White House press release ahead of today's announcement regarding ED: (1) It's all about K-12, while most federal money goes to higher ed. (2) Most of the links are to NCES reports...and NCES is now down to about three employees. www.whitehouse.gov/articles/202...

This news, arriving the day before the "abolish USED" order, captures the fundamental contradiction in this admin's approach to ed policy: A) We will eliminate the fed role and "send educ back to the states" B) We will aggressively wield USED against states to enforce our vision for social policy

Just in from the Ed. Dept.

REPORTER: What responsibility do you feel to the civil servants who have now lost their jobs? Many of them worked at the Dept of Education during your first term. TRUMP: Many of them don't work at all. Many of them never showed up to work.

President of D.C.'s State Brd of Ed said cuts could include things like high-impact tutoring, Safe Passage program, and more. He thinks some charter schools could be forced to close. “You take away their financing,” Patterson said, “and schools will fail.” www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
