Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Catastrophic bleaching of #Ningaloo reef in WA with fossil fuel driven global warming record sea surface temperatures is absolutely gut wrenching - but no one should be surprised. This has been long predicted by the scientific community. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

The NIH currently funds 4,400 active projects totaling $2.5 billion in Texas, much of it in Houston. These cuts violate that law, hurt people, and undermine the very system of scientific research and groundbreaking advancements that we are so proud happen here in #TX07.

Brutal: "The bitter truth is we’re still grappling with racism and sexism, and there are forces willing to exploit that to gain power and money. And their enablers are fine with that because then they don’t have to do the work of introspection."

The resistance will bring down Musk and Trump. Congress, wake up before your power is gone. The GOP begging Trump to release money to their states is pathetic—stand up to this tyranny. Congress controls the purse strings.

Trump’s freeze on federal funds leaves some farmers waiting in the cold A federal freeze on certain #USDA programs has held up billions of dollars for conservation and caused layoffs at IOWA nonprofit that supports soil/water quality NPR Rachel Cramer February 18, 2025 www.kcur.org/news/2025-02...

DOGE recommended firing staff at USDA who were working on the nation's response to bird flu and hundreds of employees working at the National Nuclear Security Administration overseeing our nuclear stockpile. Now the Trump admin is scrambling to hire them back. "Efficiency."

Democrats must make clear that, of course, we believe in changing government for the better - and show how different that is from Trump's destruction of government's capacity to protect workers, consumers, and families.

Judge John D. Bates of the D.C. Federal District Court has ordered the CDC to temporarily restore pages removed from its website to comply with Trump’s executive order barring references to race, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

NIH Updates Good news: It appears that at least of the submitted F31 diversity supplements for which the study section had disappeared from eRA commons are reappearing with the original study section. Still uncertain future, but it's a step. 1/2

Penn State has halted submission and *acceptance* of NIH grants pending the resolution of the overhead rate cut. This lost time will never be recovered. The economic cost to Pennsylvania is enormous and the cost to humanity immeasurable.

Another try to post a video: starfish larva, 1 mm long. This is a brachiolaria stage.

Tomorrow International Day of Women & Girls in Science. Good day to remember "Ida Hyde" and the "Naples @szndohrn.bsky.social Table for Promoting Scientific Research by Women" www.embrc.eu/newsroom/new...

I am done being sad about anti-DEI measures & am solidly back in the succeeding-by-spite mode. It got me through undergrad, & grad school, & my postdoc & my first asst prof position. Want me to jump through hoops for funding? Fine. I'll jump over the hoops & teach the next gen how to do it too.

Many in biotech/private sector are boasting about their ways of funding and doing science But they are staffed with PhDs and postdocs we train in our NIH and NSF funded labs in universities With university labs lacking funds to train, the private sector will be profoundly harmed

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.

A federal judge denied the Trump administration’s request to lift a temporary restraining order restricting individuals associated with DOGE from accessing sensitive Treasury Department records and payment systems.

You are not powerless, and he is not unstoppable. Look at, and learn from, the funding freeze and how quickly he was forced to surrender.

K is for Kiwa. In hydrothermal vents and methane seeps >1000m, exotic locales like Antarctica and the Galapagos, yeti crabs (of octonauts fame) thrive. Divorced from sunlight, they farm chemosynthetic bacteria on their own claws, waving them around! Art @thefuzzyslug.bsky.social #CrabAZ 🦀🧪🦑

Marie Curie was an amazing scientist!! She won two (2) Nobel Prizes before the Sorbonne would hire her as a professor, because she was a woman. I thought of her often when I was discriminated against in academia!

Hi Bluesky! Glad to be here.

Trump ordered the EPA to reinstate previous water and efficiency standards for showers, toilets, dishwashers, and other appliances, along with earlier standards for lightbulbs.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI. I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

This International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the brilliant women in our community and highlight articles by #WomeninScience to keep the conversations going(1/3) @davislab.bsky.social discusses gender inequalities in academia and shares her story of becoming a mother-scientist:

Super great that one of the major funding bodies that supports my physics research is now officially in opposition to me being the one to do it.

DYK? Plants are more intelligent than the members U.S. Congress. They know how to ward off threats to their existence, warn others, and destroy their enemies.

Congratulations to all of the Society for Developmental Biology Award winners!! I am surprised and humbled to win the Lifetime Achievement Award!! I continue to fight for our young scientists and trainees, so they can continue to do excellent science. THANK YOU!!

Mr. Patel has been directly involved in secretly orchestrating a purge of career officials at the FBI. Emil Bove, then acting No. 2 at the Justice Department, fired career civil servants solely at the request of a private citizen.

Short video of human subject-derived neuronal network activity, from a control subject and individual with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD). IDD model's elevated network bursting and synchronization can be used to identify compounds to normalize network activity.

Most of these F31 applicants who had their apps pulled from review will be first time newbies to the NIH system. They are not hardened to the brutality like most of us. So heartbreaking to contemplate their disappointment and confusion and pain over the lost opportunity.

Having never been much of a user of the little bird I am not used to the small post format. Be kind to me as I learn. And hope desperately that I can retain everything in Facebook....
