We are looking for a postdoc in #EvolutionarySystemsBiology. Exciting science, amazing team, wonderful city! landrylab.ibis.ulaval.ca/research-opp... #evolution #synbio #systemsbiology #genomics

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

A small glimmer of hope is that some of the fired feds are giving off some serious Obi Wan vibes. Truly inspirational.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

🦊 Friday was my last day working at 18F. It was a team of extraordinary people, but a few things happened that made me realize I had to leave. Everything happens so much these days, so I thought I’d write down for myself what happened, and how I made my decision: ethanmarcotte.com/wrote/leavin...

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

I'm starting to hear that NSF firings have begun. If you're affected and want to talk, please reach out via signal @jonlambert.12

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

State-level public-good-focused research institutes. California can afford an in-state CDC / NOAA / etc. Protects research and researchers, grows goodwill, prevents international brain drain, easy linkages with California universities. Ditto Mass. Surely people thinking about this already?

Termination notices going out this afternoon to more than 300 employees of the National Cancer Institute. Access likely ends today. Four weeks paid leave and that’s it. Strong power move for Team Cancer.

Friends in the DC area: I will be giving a Profs and Pints talk about the science of sustainable seafood. It's based on my upcoming book on the topic. Please share with interested folks! Get tickets here: profsandpints.ticketleap.com/net/ 🧪🦑🌎🐟

The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this

The average user doesn't want AI, and these companies have FAFO'd with it. But sadly they'll continue to push it because *capitalism* and goodness forbid they take a loss on a very poor investment.

Since my kids have grown, I read a LOT. This year was no different. I read fiction, non-fiction and in particular, science themed non-fiction in form of physical books, ebooks & audiobooks. Allow me to share my "read" list for 🧪📚 in 2024: 83 science themed books, 36 written by women. 🧵

Hi. I'm Andrew. I own New England's oldest map store because last year I moved across the country after an old guy retired and gave it to me Willy Wonka-style. Visit my store in Rhode Island. www.mapcenter.com

I'm recruiting a PhD student to join my lab at the University of New Orleans starting in Fall 2025. Research topics will focus on building and using phylogenies to study the diversification of birds, with an emphasis on Neotropical bird radiations. Contact me if interested.

A very interesting preprint. The same is likely true for closely related bat species with great phenotypic differences maintained in the presence of massive gene flow. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

hey people who teach Ornithology - would you be so kind as to share your syllabus with me? I'm proposing a new Ornithology course here, and would be v helpful to have examples as I make a syllabus... @evornithology.bsky.social @clarkrushing.bsky.social etc etc

Thrilled to announce Boltz-1, the first open-source and commercially available model to achieve AlphaFold3-level accuracy on biomolecular structure prediction! An exciting collaboration with Jeremy, Saro, and an amazing team at MIT and Genesis Therapeutics. A thread!

If you're interested in the evolution of sex determination, check out this opinion piece from Tom Kocher, @tonygamble.bsky.social , @behrenskristen.bsky.social , Will Gammerdinger, and me. We argue that genetic variation in sex determination is probably more prevalent that most people think.
