The first and most deadly lie that every totalitarian regime tells you is that you are powerless. bsky.app/profile/acyn...

Elon Musk imagines himself as a James Bond villain - possibly Hugo Drax from Moonraker, but no matter how much damage he does or how much money he spends, he will never escape the fact that he's actually just Mr. Wormwood from Roald Dahl's "Matilda." bsky.app/profile/dfel...

Tried to lecture on the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system and international debt financing, but I ended up ranting about 1980's industrial policy debates, the cross-border disaggregation of supply chains, and the fact that no one has any clue at all how tariffs will affect the economy.

Still weird to me that a plurality of US voters supported someone with an unambiguous track record of endangering the US - stealing classified info, lying about COVID numbers, & alienating allies out of spite. His own nat'l security staff said so in the campaign. www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

If I have anything to say about it, it will be. A terrible one. bsky.app/profile/erin...

Vance: The world would be better if Europe had the courage to stand up and oppose American Presidents when they become imperialist bullies. Europe: Lesson learned, JD. Tell your boss we're canceling orders for American weapons & will deploy troops to defend Greenland. bsky.app/profile/jwmu...

Congress will no more assert its lawful power over tariffs than it will impeach and remove Trump. But pointing out that Congress could increases pressure on every elected Republican and clarifies their complicity in each Trump atrocity. They fear this accountability. bsky.app/profile/eliz...

When George Bush and gov't attorneys like John Yoo first placed America's feet on this path after 2001, I was not the only one to point out that it would lead to where we stand today. Because it has grown & normalized for 25 years, the fight to stop it will now be harder. bsky.app/profile/jims...

I gave Harvard years of poorly compensated labor as a grad student & still more as an adjunct faculty member, winning 7 teaching awards. Admirable though it may be, I will not be guilt-tripped by a momentary, self-serving decision to resist fascism into sending them money. bsky.app/profile/jfal...

Loosely translated, Europeans are frightened to come to fascist America. This is humiliating and terrible for reasons of basic morality, but it will also harm the American economy and worsen its financial position. www.n-tv.de/wirtschaft/D...

No, no, no - you aren't thinking like a political theorist: *people* have an absolute right to due process because we have nothing but the assertion of the government that anyone is, in fact, a criminal. Tyranny begins the moment the burden of proof falls upon the accused. bsky.app/profile/asha...

Okay, points of unvarnished, accurate reporting. And anyway, Rolling Stone becoming America's paper of record isn't the strangest thing that has happened so far this year. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

No, and the bastard didn't wear a tie in the Oval Office. I doubt that a Trump endorsement of Bukele meme coins is in the cards with that kind of attitude. bsky.app/profile/prch...

"You did the right thing, but the motives of each decision-maker involved weren't unimpeachably selfless!" -A perspective on politics asserted by no political scientist ever bsky.app/profile/dmnd...

Powerful message. Glad to see AOC and Sanders deliver it. Sometimes it doesn't matter that your candle can't illuminate the darkness if it inspires others to light their own. bsky.app/profile/acyn...

Constitutional crisis involving rendering people to torture prisons in El Salvador = not worth commenting on Defense of the prerogatives of Harvard = requires immediate, personal intervention I'm not denigrating the importance of Harvard's stand, but the contrast is weird bsky.app/profile/bara...

Well, at least you got a nice run mocking the people who were calling Trump a fascist & warning this would happen. Sure they were right, but for partisan, ideological reasons that no sophisticated person who clearly perceived the folly of both sides could take seriously. bsky.app/profile/thed...

One of the amazing things about the Trump administration is that it keeps presenting us with the easiest, open book moral tests: are we the country that transcended this, or a country that lies to itself that it never happened? But I'm still not sure we're going to pass. bsky.app/profile/past...

How embarrassing is it to be shamed into shuffling toward maybe doing the right thing by the moral example of Harvard University?! bsky.app/profile/bgru...

Well, if nothing else, the last few weeks have proven that Trump isn't very good at understanding the value of trade... Or understanding values in general, come to think of it. But anyone paying attention since 2015 already knew that. bsky.app/profile/ronf...

Since it is my understanding that the WH Press Corps is currently made up of lobotomized cable news reporters and a few fascism influencers on Instagram who won their places by collecting Trump meme coins, this is not entirely surprising. bsky.app/profile/hunt...

Man, it's hard to even imagine how much payola Trump is going to demand to make this suit go away. www.cnn.com/2025/04/14/m...

Terry Pratchett may not be the most sophisticated political philosopher to write genre fantasy fiction, but his framing of basic Enlightenment political philosophy in the Sam Vimes books always warmed my Classical Liberal heart. bsky.app/profile/rinc...

Oh - hello me from 1994 after reading the Church Committee Report and The Imperial Presidency! Except the Courts are doing much more to stop the President than I expected - probably because the President is doing much stupider and egregious things than I imagined possible. bsky.app/profile/norm...

When the billionaires are guillotined after Trump produces such mass misery that we have a 2nd American Revolution, I will, if needed, represent Pritzker before the Revolutionary Tribunal and argue for his unconditional and honorable release. This goes in the evidence file bsky.app/profile/govp...

This is a plausible interpretation of the USSC ruling. If this is correct, then Supreme Court faces its own test of character - Trump is not implementing the Federalist Society's vision in many areas, and conceding him dictatorial powers could end their judicial project. bsky.app/profile/norm...

And I am confident neither that anyone operating under Article III *can* prove them wrong nor that enough people operating under Article I have the courage to *try*. bsky.app/profile/adam...

I miss Joe Biden and not having to wonder every damn day what new scam, power-grab, crime, internet meme-driven assault on the Constitution, or other unclassified atrocity the President and his coterie of Nazi-adjacent thugs will undertake. bsky.app/profile/carl...

Wow, Harvard has turned their homepage into an advertisement for the value to society of the university's research and what it is that their threatened federal funding supports. Very impressive branding - it looks as though Harvard has decided to go all-in against Trump's threats. www.harvard.edu
