Uncertain tariff policy is not just a function of competence but also of deep uncertainty regarding a) rank order of goals (revenue, reshoring, negotiating tactic, big stick); b) power of GOP factions associated with each goal c) FX & bond market response d) popular tolerance for inflationary pain.

For all this talk of American manufacturing being extinct, on every bloc in this great country I pass hard-working Americans toiling the line at yet another factory of cheesecake.

At Macy's in Washington bulk-buying socks with the single-minded determination of a doomsday-prepper who has just seen the first glint of the approaching meteor.

Let the Chinese languish in the 18th century industries of chips, smartphones, computers and personal electronics - safe behind the tariff wall, the US shall regain superpower status by dominanting the jobs of the future: little paper napkin and sock manufacturing.

The variables in my overly simplistic formula for who is going to "win" a trade war are: a) Economic strength b) Skill in wielding that strength strategically c) Your public's commitment to the cause and pain tolerance You can draw your own conclusions.

-partially extracting the pitchfork I impaled myself upon when trying to stab you- "Brilliantly executed. Textbook Art of the Deal."

Pro-tip: If you don't frame your trade negotiations as masculinity contests where any concession makes you a cuck, people will be less likely to call you a pathetic wimp when you do the economically rational thing and back away from the brink.

If even some of the things on this list are accurate, things are about to get a lot worse.

Liz Lemon Voice: "Just ban imports Jack, this is taking forever."

Men on Fox News will really be like "you believe in white collar work? that pales in masculinity to my strategy, backbreaking physical labor in dangerous conditions" and then not perform physical labor

"Heyyyyy guuuuuurl, are you the US stock market? ... because the way I keep making irrational and impulsive decisions that massively impact us both without consulting you or considering your feelings is making you question our future."

Shaggy: "It wasn't me!" Girlfriend: "Nice try, but I have derived your exact level of infidelity by dividing the number of ex girlfriends you've had by the value of the anniversary gifts you got me and halving the result, so..."

If accurate, this is much more of a scalpel response than China's flamethrower strategy of just mirroring 34% tariffs back. 28 billion is just 7% of US exports to the EU, but could hurt like hell if they're well chosen while sparing EU importers' pain. Argument to be made for both strategies.

Every UK government apparently has to go through this bizarre humiliation ritual learning journey where they first proclaim that their diplomatic savvy and personal rapport with the US President will ensure a swift, brilliant trade deal... then slowly discover what that actually means and say πŸ‘‡

Trump has the Dow Jones going down night after night and here you are, still having to nag your boyfri... <shots ring out>.
