Mountainhead's only miss is that no one used the word "orthogonal."

When I need a bike part/tool, I call my local bike shop. Either they don't have the part, or need to order it. Sometimes they offer to do it (like loosening a stuck freewheel) for more than the part costs. And so... Amazon.com.

I'm one of those people. I won't be ranking Zohran first, but I won't be ranking Cuomo at all.

Reading Sahil Lavingia's blog post about working for DOGE and it's just painful how little any of them bothered to learn anything about civic tech. Silicon Valley types thinking they're the first people to name problems and solve them sahillavingia.com/doge

here’s a crazy statistic: more people work for the MTA (~70K employees) than are coal miners in the entire country (~42K)

Went to Rome, took some photos.

Wrote about the end of Glitch - the platform, the union, the dreams, and the technical debt that killed it all. Tried to keep it honest but not too spicy. Been gone a year now but felt like the community deserved some context đź’ž

Interviewed the guy who directs Mets games, who has been weaving in some high-falutin film canon homages into the broadcast. Baseball games are better with De Palma references! slate.com/culture/2025...

This is the death cross they warned you about.

$6.5 billion is all it costs to solve the male loneliness epidemic.* *for two men

Sometimes I'm on the subway platform. I want to check for delays. But I have horrible cell service. The official MTA.info is ~8mb (less cached, but still). It never loads. MTA.fyi is 13kb. It's static HTML, updated once a minute, and loads fast basically anywhere—no matter how bad your connection.

Savage use of alt-text.

Wondering if the spaghetti is done, I nibble on a strand. “Chat are we cooked?” I whisper.

It's staggeringly hard to figure out what time our NYC public school lets out.

I love it when we come up with cool, low-tech ways to make people's lives better; simply changing the way people arrange bricks in kilns can radically improve air quality, without the need for expensive pollution mitigation systems.

There was a brief moment in the 2010s when one popular creative idea was just "people doing parkour"

NYC park sprinklers just turned on for the first time. The vibe is elevated.

To the best of my understanding, mta.info is the fastest way to get NYC subway delay info. But when I've got horrible data in stations and I'm in a rush, the ~2mb load absolutely crushes me. So: - Would a lightweight version (12kb) be useful to you, too? - If yes, what should we use for a domain?

Happy book day to @amandalitman.bsky.social—who is both a dear friend and ALSO very smart. My copy is arriving today.

“Then all of the sudden one year, no more celebrities — just influencers,” he said. “I can’t stand influencers. It makes my skin crawl when I hear influencers.”

I have often wondered how many thousands and thousands of photos I'm in now that we have cameras and iPhones everywhere. In the background of my photos is surely some future famous person. Fun! Scary!
