It is incredibly challenging to learn Russian right now, as there are very few immersion opportunities. This foolish move will decimate not just academic studies in our field, but the ability of the US to conduct successful foreign policy for generations. Profoundly stupid and self-defeating.

This is utterly deranged. Our only hope is that a coalition of the willing invades us and promotes democratic regime change.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

I'd like to see AI navigate their way in special slippers past the guards thru the halls of RGIA in Petersburg to argue w a Russian archivist for access to 3 docs at a time of "special value" & then deal w the 18th century handwriting & contextualize it meaningfully. Good luck, bot.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

Border czar Tom Homan is on CNN complaining that Chicago is “very well educated” and people “know their rights” too well for ICE to be able to enforce mass deportations. Good work, neighbors.

Faced with an overwhelming vote by its members to condemn scholasticide in Palestine, the American Historical Association council has vetoed the resolution. Entirely in character for an organization that’s long been useless, but still galling

Spending a frosty afternoon learning from Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsa, and my wonderful colleague Darya Tsymbalyuk. Thanks to IHouse and @ceeres-uchicago.bsky.social

New procrastination level: digging up old AAASS/ASEEES conference programs. A lot has changed since 1964 but how about we bring back and rephrase the informal dinner talk: "What are we doing?" (3 drinks minimum, and we put everything on the table in 150 minutes) @aseees.bsky.social

It’s the Vera Zasulich trial redux

EXCLUSIVE: Thousands of documents obtained from the Yale Police Department show how the campus police closely surveilled pro-Palestine protestors, in collaboration with the FBI and counterterrorism forces. jewishcurrents.org/inside-yale-...

The Syrian civil war was the origin of many of our problems: Isolationism, hatred of refugees and Russian disinformation. Now, finally, there is hope. iandunt.substack.com/p/syria-ther...

A photo I posted of graffiti in Syria in 2014. "One day the war will be over and I will return to my poem" I hope they will return to their poem

The Heritage Foundation turning the Protocols of the Elders of Zion into a bad slide to show how Jews like Soros and Pritzker are promoting antisemitism 😵‍💫

The Bolshevik Revolution is the paradigmatic example of replacement of one ruling class with another…yet many of the old elites survived, and many of their descendants become the “new” Soviet elite. Great work by Koen Schoors (Ghent Economics), who will be on campus next Tuesday. Join us if you can!

Such a wonderful #ASEEES24 that left me feeling warm and fuzzy. Except for the hotel fridges that only run for two hours, which I only figured out on day 3. Ick

Finally halfway to ASEEES after a 4-hour tarmac delay due to Chicago snowpacalypse.

I am strangely finding comfort in having seen all this before in Yugoslavia, unimaginable things happening, the worst thugs coming to wield the power over life and death, cruelty galore, institutions that were supposed to be forever collapsing like houses of cards giving way to unchecked criminality

Third urgent care visit of the week between me and the toddler. I haven’t even had the time/headspace to worry about the impending apocalypse.

US-based academics will be increasingly asked to participate in activities that normalize the far right. The normalization will be enforced by university administrators, who themselves will be surveilled and intimidated by the far right. 🧵

Back to doom scrolling, feeling helpless, and speed dialing my representatives in DC again. How very 2016.
