There it is.

Or was it an undocumented immigrant? Or was it Greenland? You know, just sitting there smugly not belonging to us?

I'm sure this will end well. www.cruiselawnews.com/2025/04/arti...

According to one version of the absurdity doctrine, courts must reject any law, or any interpretation of a law, that could lead to an absurd outcome.

I explained to my 33 month-old granddaughter that we used to have a dog and a cat. At one point I said "we lost them" and so now she keeps looking under and behind things, saying she's going to "find gabba and gamma puppy and kitty" and it's breaking my heart for so many reasons.

"You're going to get tired of winning. You're going to say, 'Please Mr. President, I have a headache. Please, don't win so much. This is getting terrible.' And I'm going to say, 'No, we have to make America great again.' You're gonna say, 'Please.' I said, 'Nope, nope. We're gonna keep winning.'"

If you suspect those "tariffs" that Trump held up on a sign were lies pulled out of thin air, you're right. A Redditor figured it out: they just took the inverse of our trade balance, with the exception that if the result was less than 10%—even if we have a trade surplus—they used 10%.

I realize that we're now living in a world in which every day is a deluge of stupidity and evil. And I realize how exhausting this all is for us all. But please pay attention to this.

David Brooks on PBS NewsHour last night: "People call Trump a transactional politician but he’s actually an extortionist… 'transaction' is we do a deal; 'extortion' is I bully you until you give me what I want…

Must everything be turned into reality TV? Say it ain’t so, ATK. youtu.be/JJAyMLzlEkc?...

As a (non-practicing) MPH, I can’t think of anyone living who has thought as deeply and insightfully about healthcare at a systemic level as @agawande.bsky.social. 160,000 deaths from malaria alone—which overwhelmingly kills children under the age of 5. This is heartbreaking. And horrifying.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this quote lately.

At the BA First Lounge in T5. Overheard by the woman sitting next to me, to her partner: "Ironically, there was no gravy."

« Faites attention, quand une démocratie est malade, le fascisme vient à son chevet, mais ce n’est pas pour prendre de ses Nouvelles. » "Be careful, when a democracy is sick, fascism comes to its bedside, but it is not to inquire about its health." Albert Camus

I’ve used CRM tools and wielded correctly, they can improve customer service. I use generative AI tools every day and find them incredibly helpful for certain tasks. But CRM + GenAI + overeager marketers? That’s a flood of inbox AI sludge and it’s rising by the day.

A decade ago, more or less, I said that I would know I trusted a self-driving car when I handed the wheel over to it on Highway 1 south of Big Sur. I stand behind that.

What if the Liberty Mutual insurance commercials with "Doug and the LiMu Emu" are deliberately bad? What if they decided that with so many funny insurance commercials out there, they'd be more memorable if they kept people talking about how unamusing they are? I mean, I'm writing about it here...

From last weekend’s Scottish Sunday Herald TV listings (h/t @beeblebrox.com). Wow.

A wonderful little David Lynch tribute from an artist on DeviantArt. www.deviantart.com/andreu-t/art...

True love... Me: My flight back to the US is delayed. My connecting flight home is cancelled, the next flight is full, and the last flight tonight is dicey. SO: I'll come get you from your flight to the US. Me: That's a four-hour drive each way. SO: It's no problem. Let's get you home tonight.

"Ours blanc" is the enigmatic Mona Lisa of animal sculptures.

When Trump is unwilling to rule out military force to seize Greenland, that is a direct threat to the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark supported the USA in the War in Afghanistan from 2001 onwards, suffering 43 casualties, the highest per-capita casualty rate among our allies. Let that sink in.

"The secret of magic is you would not be willing to work as hard as we are, and that’s the whole secret."—Penn Jillette "Sometimes magic is just someone spending more time on something than anyone else might reasonably expect."—Teller

John Gruber on Mark Zuckerberg complaining about Apple disadvantaging Meta's Ray-Ban sunglasses. "If only..." daringfireball.net/linked/2025/...

I can’t love this more.

"The most inconvenient truth of all [is that] no matter how good your argument, and how much evidence you marshal in its support, people don't believe what they see; they see what they believe."—Angus Hervey (Fix the News)

Whenever you hear someone claim that one or another LLM maker has "won", remember that the OpenAI model that was state-of-the-art less than two years ago (GPT-4-0314) is now ranked 69th among current models, with 18 organizations delivering higher-scoring models since. (h/t @simonwillison.net)

“Do you know Lynyrd Skynyrd?” “Not personally, no. But I do know someone who can slide into his DMs.”

At my first #Hogmanay celebration in the Highlands with @beeblebrox.com, and I’m here to tell you, all those Scottish period dramas have been lying to us.
