Now, over a decade later, I see clearly that his meddling wasn’t a fluke, that rich men wanted to have this kind of influence on the news you see. It’s not just aggregators, either. Thiessen writes and Bezos publishes and we are no better informed than we would be if we’d never read their words. 4/x

Eventually, his insertion into the news was total and we just knew we were to let the more right-leaning posts through even if they weren’t truthful. At the time, I chalked this up to a local, independent aggregator violating the common ethics but that the industry writ large was healthy. 3/x

But then, as time went on, I watched the owner meddle with the opinion pages. We had rules against overt bias and unreliable sources and we fought disinformation. We took down opinion pieces that were little more than hit jobs. Then the owner stepped in and saved the ones he agreed with. 2/x

Once upon a time, I worked in news. I was an editor at an aggregator, which means I didn’t really do much besides correct grammar and fact checking, but it was news all the same. I believed then that by making sure these posts were factual that the world would be informed. This had meaning! 1/x
