A 'hedge' of Ostrich Ferns, Matteuccia struthiopteris Yes they are in full sun. They burn in late summer. Used to be shaded by hemlocks that died of Adelges tsugae, the hemlock woolly adelgid. They shade themselves well enough to survive each year. The yard drains toward ferns.

An invasive specie in CT, Euonymus alatus, known variously as burning bush, winged euonymus, winged spindle, and winged spindle-tree. It has been planted in gardens for the past 50 years. Its seeds now invading nature preserves, especially near the borders. In CT, still for sale. #nature #invasive

Damaged to ash tree caused by ash borer. The ash borer eats the cambium layer of the tree. This is the only 'live' layer of the tree underneath the bark. This damage stops nutrients and water from traveling up the tree to the leaves, thus killing the tree. #invasive #nature

2 hours of invasive species removal. Ground was partially frozen, so progress not as much as usual. A large and small pile. More than half is Japanese bittersweet. Crow Valley Preserve, Weston, CT, USA #nature #invasive

From a book titled 'Farne: Ein Portrait von Solvejg Nitzke' "Farnliebe und Formliebe gehen oft Hand in Hand." My translation is: "Love of ferns and form often go hand in hand" As a fern is green as is much of the plants around it, identifying its fern requires recognizing form.

For this #FossilFriday: a cross section of a tiny fossil rootlet. It belonged to a Glossopteris tree that was growing in the late Permian, about 260 million years ago 🌳⛏️ #paleobotany *~ 0.5 mm in diameter
