All weekend I’ve been thinking about Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s portrait of the undocumented people who came to Ground Zero post 9/11 in her gorgeous book, The Undocumented Americans: “The first responders were firemen and EMT workers. The second responders were undocumented immigrants.

When Trump was elected in 2016, I was working for a group that was organizing day laborers in the outer boroughs of NYC. I’ll never forget how the core of the work changed overnight, from preventing wage theft to stopping deportation. Guys looking to work, to contribute, to help build this country.

Netanyahu has been reading multiple meetings in an attempt to get to a conscription bill that would allow the ultra-Orthodox to stay in the coalition. Reporters are saying that he’s moving closer, but not there yet.

🚨BIG STORY: Senators put a line into the crypto bill requiring bankrupt banks to prioritize remunerating crypto investors over depositors. The provision could require banks to take cash from your savings account & use it to pay senators' crypto donors. www.levernews.com/cryptos-new-...

This is f*cked up! Stories of ICE luring immigrants to hearings just to arrest them keep coming—now they’re going after kids. Martir Garcia Lara, a fourth grader from Southern California, went to a hearing in Houston with his dad. Instead of an update, they were both detained and separated by ICE.

Big Tech has promised to govern itself for the public good since the dawn of the Internet. Congress has allowed it. Cambridge Analytica — no new governance. Devastating revelations about platforms/kids’ mental health — no new governance. AI? Carte blanche. Remember this moment and #killthebill

ICE mistakenly detained a U.S. Marshal in Tucson. "A Deputy US Marshal who fit the general description of a subject being sought by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) was briefly detained at a federal building in Tucson after entering the lobby of the building”.

Senate Commerce's version of the budget bill out tonight requires states to not enforce their AI rules for 10 years under the moratorium to receive federal broadband subsidies under BEAD www.commerce.senate.gov/services/fil...

wasn't just enough to freeze a state's ability to regulate consumer protection and civil rights. now, very coercive tactics: if you want the money to build out high-speed internet to un-served and under-served communities, we have to ban your state's ability to do AI policy.

There are literally no words to describe how ridiculous this is - there's nothing more frustrating to me than false dichotomies in policy (eg. I was just complaining today about Cali Prop 25's "cash bail" vs "algo risk assessment"). Pitting "AI regulation" vs "rural broadband access" is insane.

It’s the Ted Cruz signature move: - the moratorium can’t survive the Byrd Rule on its own - he doesn’t like broadband subsidies for poor people - marry them together and either he gets his moratorium or the broadband funding gets stripped out too.

A land ruled by fear is not the land of the free.

DEAN: What's the tariff on bananas? LUTNICK: Generally 10% DEAN: Walmart has already increased the cost of bananas by 8% LUTNICK: If you build in America, there is no tariff DEAN: We cannot build bananas in America

Someone thought no one would ask. @smaldo.bsky.social asked.

I wish I believed the break up was real and that if it is, it is materially significant and not just Russell Vought not needing Musk anymore

I’m enjoying this as much as anyone, but seems very likely they do some big show of squashing the beef within, like, a week.

Don't let these men and their pissing match distract from the fact Republicans are still trying to rip away healthcare and food from actual children.

A good day to remember: 1. Trump is an empty vessel 2. He can be bought by anyone willing to pay 3. What binds together powerful MAGA forces – from the Kremlin and Christian nat'lists to Elon – is a willingness to use him as blunt instrument just long enough to achieve their own illiberal visions

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

Immigration discourse so far has centered around the growing policy mismatch between what people “voted for” and what they’re getting. But this piece is good in pointing out there is also a deep values/ideological mismatch that Dems can exploit. newrepublic.com/article/1961...

A Guatemalan man who was wrongly deported to Mexico was permitted to reenter the United States, his lawyer said, marking the first known instance of the Trump administration returning a deportee in response to a judicial order.

A functioning opposition party might be able to combine “We’ve got 10 million people that are not going to be on Medicaid,” together with “Well, we’re all going to die” into a pretty effective ad.

Lee: Would say it would be “illegal DEI” for a lesson plan on the Tulsa race massacre? McMahon: I’d have to get back to you Lee: Do you know what the Tulsa race massacre is? McMahon: I’d like to look into it more and get back to you on it.

Actually, this isn’t true. No such play or movie was ever produced.

Pleased join @markey.senate.gov today in a discussion about protecting our rights and opportunities in the age of AI. A 10-year freeze on AI guardrails would abandon the American public and ignore its concerns. *Truly* innovative technology must be just and fair. www.masslive.com/politics/202...

Helpful zoom-out on domestic political situation facing Netanyahu right now from @avishaybsg.bsky.social

Read @johndelury.bsky.social on how South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae-myung, can open room for détente between Pyongyang, Seoul, and Washington, laying the groundwork for policies that could reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The company has spent nearly $700,000 on elections around The Bronx, including six figures boosting Elsie Encarnacion in a crowded race where they’re not the only group spending a lot to boost a candidate.

lol

I’m so sorry about the targeted terrorist attack in Boulder against the Jewish community. Hate like this can’t be tolerated. We must stand firmly against it—always, in all forms. ⚠️ Friends: be cautious. Graphic and disturbing videos are circulating on social. Take care of yourselves, and stay safe.

All victims of Boulder Pearl Street attack expected to survive, Boulder police chief says https://trib.al/iVNgOr2

I am still thinking about the atrocity of the attacks last weekend in Boulder. The rise of antisemitic violence across this country is unmistakable and unacceptable, and we all need to strongly stand against it.

Ami, you’re a great friend. Means more than you know.

Alex Jones, who spent years ranting about shadowy government mass surveillance technology, is now stanning for Palantir

The Trump administration rescinded Biden-era guidance telling health providers who perform abortions in emergency cases that they're protected under federal law.

Putin portrays himself as a geopolitical grand master, shrewdly moving pieces on the world’s chess board. Yet the Russian leader is not executing a master plan but improvising in pursuit of a single goal: staying in power, writes Anastasia Edel.

My friend Miles Taylor is a person of principle, courage, and integrity. He is a patriot. I am not surprised, but no less inspired, that he is choosing to fight the revenge orders against him. He is doing it for all of us. Please consider supporting his effort.

ProPublica reports that the U.S. knew most Venezuelan immigrants sent to CECOT had been convicted of no U.S. crimes before it labeled them terrorists/deported them. I wrote about this crisis – and why we're hosting a June 11 conversation with @andreapitzer.bsky.social and Erica Chenoweth on this.

PSA: One of those anecdotal data points that might be useful to know—more than a quarter of my mom's ward at her nursing home has contracted Covid in the last 10 days or so.

The lesson people infuriatingly never seem to master is that there is no creating a police state just for other people. If you create a police state with no due process for immigrants or accused criminals, then that's the system you've created for yourself.
