pleased to report that after a diversion that may have lasted ten minutes or ten-hundred years, the beings I visited after following the melodic bells have let me loose. cannot guarantee I will not wander after the next weird noise I hear though.

update: I followed the melodic bells into the forest and came across a funky knoll that looked like a face... on closer inspection there were dancing creatures there maybe 13" tall, very scruffy looking in a state of ecstasy -- against better judgement I approached (1/2)
