Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

To celebrate #SuperbOwls, here's one of my favorites: the snowy owl. 📷 Wilbur Mills, coastal plain of Arctic National Wildlife Range (now Refuge), Alaska, 1969. Fun fact: 1969 was a "peak-lemming year" on the Arctic coastal plain. And more lemmings meant more snowy owls! #envhist #alaskasky

ICYMI: "Almost without exception, Survivors talked about the places they were born and raised. They described the Land that nurtured them and their relationships with Land." - Crystal Gail Fraser and @jdunkin.bsky.social niche-canada.org/2025/01/09/h... #envhist #cdnhist #indigenous

It was a great mail day. I really enjoyed @hollyguise.bsky.social's article on how Indigenous activists, artists, & their allies fought for environmental justice in Alaska—and now look forward to her book! Congratulations! #alaskasky @uwapress.bsky.social 🗃️❄️

Reupping this @andykroll.bsky.social @mtredden.bsky.social and @nicksurgey.bsky.social piece as we await the confirmation of Russell Vought www.propublica.org/article/vide...

It was such a joy to talk with @sarahmgilman.bsky.social about BEING CARIBOU and the grassroots history of the Arctic Refuge struggle. Her lovely essay honors the memory of Karsten Heuer, who recently passed away. #envhist #envhum @uncpress.bsky.social 🦌❄️🎞️

In 2007, I read Karsten Heuer's book Being Caribou, and it changed my life. Last year, Karsten died at just 56 years old. I hope you'll read this remembrance I wrote, about his work and what it meant to me and so many others. It's as relevant now as it ever was ❤️ www.hcn.org/articles/the...

Jan 29 1925: dog teams set out from Nenana, Alaska to bring diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, where the disease was spreading. 20 teams & mushers carried the serum over 674 miles in under 130 hours. Jan 29 2025: calling my senator to vote against a guy, so kids can get the diphtheria vaccine next year

NEW 📗: If you're interested in race, justice, & environmental history, then I highly recommend NOT JUST GREEN, NOT JUST WHITE, a collection out this week from @univnebpress.bsky.social. #envhist www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/nebraska/978...

Why are university presses important? A thread 🧵

Environmental Justice pages down. No surprise--just witnessing

When the climate shifts, caribou make decisions about where they migrate—showing that they understand risk & use their knowledge to collectively make decisions to lower risks for the herd: “a pretty clear and dramatic example of the concrete importance of social memory.” phys.org/news/2025-01...

Amid all the bluster, hubris, & imperial saber-rattling, here's some thoughtful reporting by Adam Federman (from 2023) about Greenland: from the history of US militarism to mining, geopolitical tensions, & Inuit communities. #envhist @typeinvestigations.org

In addition to Banerjee's photo, consider the statement the Gwich'in Steering Committee issued about the lease sale, esp. this paragraph about their relations with the caribou. Without Gwich'in leadership, the Arctic Refuge would have long ago been turned into an industrialized oil field. #envhist

Global Western colonialism is so infused in media that this DealBook article frames Greenland as a “deal” to “approach.” Capitalism involves assessing and quantifying land while removing the people- Inuit are mentioned nowhere in these media articles. 1/

This #Arctic Refuge lease sale should have never come about in the first place - it was a rider on the 2017 Tax Bill that was pushed through without the voices & consideration of the public. Protection of the Refuge is a human rights issue to the #Gwich’in Nation.

LA's fires are whirling around the telescopes where we discovered the expanding universe. We've never needed human intelligence and curiosity more billmckibben.substack.com/publish/post...

Amid all the bad, here's some good news: the lease sale of the Arctic Refuge, scheduled for tomorrow, received NO NEW BIDS. Here are pregnant female caribou, migrating to the place where they give birth, the same place that drilling proponents want to turn into an oil field. 📷 Subhankar Banerjee

I enjoyed talking to The Grist for their piece about Jimmy Carter and energy politics. #envhist #jimmycarter grist.org/politics/jim...

Big win for the Gwich'in people and everyone that wants to see the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge remain protected! "The repeated failures suggest that oil companies are either not interested in drilling in the refuge or do not think it’s worth the cost" 🙌 www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/c...

My library made an AI generated image to promote my talk about why we probably shouldn't do that. Come inhabit a space of dissonance and disgruntlement with me!

We will never call it this again. Deenaalee (Denali) knows its true names. This ain’t one of them.

Oh FFS. The only constituency for changing the name from Denali to McKinley is in Ohio.

Very grateful to @finisdunaway.bsky.social whose work has been so central to me for these exceptionally generous words!!

Trump is going to push hard to open up all of #Alaska to drilling, mining, etc. We can’t afford to heat up any more than we are so we need all of us to work together to protect the #ArcticRefuge @latimes.com Mahsi’choo to my niece for joining the lawsuit to shut down the natural gas pipeline!

This is big.

Thanks, @nichecanada.bsky.social, for sharing this 2021 piece today. It looks at border-crossing caribou, Indigenous rights, and a slide show made by amateur activists. With great quotes from Norma Kassi (Vuntut Gwitchin) & others. 🦌❄️📷

Want a quick primer on what is at stake with the Arctic Refuge? See @finisdunaway.bsky.social's thread below for what it means for the Arctic refuge, the Gwichi'in, and the fight over this land. Spoiler: it is a lot more about Trump than Biden. #energysky

Wait, the Biden administration is about to sell off the Arctic Refuge?! Here's a 🧵to explain why this is happening and how it relates to the longer history and ongoing struggle to protect this land. (1) #envhist www.blm.gov/press-releas...

Such a huge surprise and honour! #CanadaPrizes @federationhss.ca

Congratulations, @wolfieprof.bsky.social! It's a terrific book and well-deserved recognition! #envhist

“We opposed the first lease sale as mandated by the 2017 Tax Act, and are disappointed that a second lease sale was ever mandated by law – it violates our rights as Indigenous Peoples.” #StandWithTheGwichin #ProtectTheArctic
