9yr old has been working on her #worldbookday costume for ages and has finally finished - she’s going as a book! 📚

On Sunday gawky and glaiket, For life no carin’ a preen; On Monday lookin’ forsaket, Wi’ a misty weet in her een; On Tuesday as prim as a daisy, And sweet as a maiden can be; On Wednesday cap’rin’ and crazy, Wi’ an eldritch glint in her e’e… —Andrew Dodds, “March” #Scots #poem #poetry

I’m not really a fan of autobiographies, but this wonderful book joins a short list of ones I’ve loved (inc. Kay, Red Dust Road, and Winterson, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal)

Yesterday’s papers all wearing the same wrapper

Jewellery is one of those words that I will always struggle to spell

Better advertising to come, but I’m excited to announce that registration is now live for our very heavily subsidised Teaching Indigenous Histories & Perspectives Conference on 28 June! Bursaries for travel are available plus free follow-up support. Please do share with all your teacher networks!

I definitely block the majority of my new followers on here - nearly all of them clearly bots. So many surgeons!

I think my 9 yr old is great at making up lil characters. She calls this one Professor Susie.

Asked to share this. It's fixed-term unfortunately but a good opportunity. Deadline: 7 March. www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DLU474/t...

Saw a guy at the petrol station at 9pm on Valentine’s Day buying the last bunch of flowers. Good luck my friend! 🫡💐

'“Even with the recent increase to fees [to £9,535], our modelling of ‘holding tariff’ v ‘maxing volume’ scenarios found that there is no longer financial benefit to taking more of this category of student. Put simply, higher volumes necessitate greater on-costs.”' 1/4

I received the most beautiful bouquet of flowers 🌺

Wasabi-flavoured Japanese Kitkat was everything you’d wish it to be 👌🏻

I initiated a personal news blackout yesterday and today, but the news keeps seeping in…

Hastily drawn matrix explaining to my kids the difference between wanting to give up pop choir & wanting to give up maths

When autocracy looms, lock arms & fight together. Excellent op-ed by Princeton SPIA colleague @kimlanelaw.bsky.social & @brookings.edu's @normeisen.bsky.social.

So torn by this mural. A: it’s celebrating a spacex launch; B: it has a tuxedo cat as an astronaut. 🚀 v 🐈‍⬛

My 9 yr old walking past all the xmas trees on the street waiting for bin collection: 🫡 ‘thank you for your service’ 🌲

I’m wondering how long it usually takes people to review a journal article? It honestly takes me the best part of a day - maybe 5 hours work. Am I just really slow? I try to be thorough & give constructive advice even (especially?) if it’s going to be a reject. But it means I can’t do lots.

I’m still going to be finding these next December aren’t I? 🌲🌲🌲

An enjoyable half hour spent blocking god-loving, truth-loving, America-loving great fathers, surgeons, army generals & Saudi princes 🤗

"I’ve worked for the Washington Post since 2008 as an editorial cartoonist. ... in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now." anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

Great day for my boiler to break down 🥶

I will be thinking about this Sophie Smith essay for some time. The way she brings her different angles and realizations to underscore what we need to face here — and especially men — is kinda staggering & unexpected. It underscores how little other reportage does this. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

This is a fabulous NYD resolution article from @slate.bsky.social -- to combat climate change we need to _radically_ do nothing. Opt out. You know you both want and need to. slate.com/technology/2...

Looking out over the approaching new year

New Year’s Eve sheep in Wytham Woods

9 yr old handmade the Xmas crackers this year & I have to say - the saving of usual £10 spent on xmas tat was v satisfying

My only complaint re Gavin and Stacey is they shouldn’t have explained the Byker Grove joke

I know there are leftovers in there

Thinking of my kid’s substitute teacher who told the class she has 2 degrees and a PhD and is getting a divorce and can’t believe she’s here in this year 7 class trying to teach geography to kids who won’t listen 😭😭
