One of my favourite Ash Wednesday anecdotes, from fifteenth-century historian Giorgio Stella, involving Pope Boniface VIII and Porcetto Spinola, the Archbishop of Genoa, in the year 1300... apparently Boniface was none too pleased with Ghibelline tendencies of the Spinola family. #medievalsky
