“We can’t even buy the rakes, if we wanted to rake the forest.” @jjreport.bsky.social

IMTs are quietly talking about what the current political environment means for this year's wildland fire suppression efforts, but it deserves a larger and more public consideration. 1/

🚨 My new book, The Folly of Realism, comes out in less than one week 🚨 Take a look at the video trailer!

This episode of Untold Earth on PBS Terra explores the seeming impossibilities behind our planet’s strangest, most unique natural wonders. This is not a forest but a single tree.

“We’re not necessarily trying to reduce area burned, but we want to reduce the negative consequences of fire,” said wildfire ecologist @firebobbc.bsky.social www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

Asked where he sees hope amid the smoke, Mr. Gray said he looks to Indigenous communities across western North America and their efforts to bring back both prescribed and cultural fires to their landscapes. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

"Now is the time for science, not silence." The war on science isn’t just politics, it’s our planet's future & the stakes have never been higher.🦈🪸🌊 As climate scientists, we must advocate & defend evidence-based policy.📄🌏 #ClimateAction #ScienceMatters www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... @science.org

A key federal agency overseeing 15 million acres of public lands in California has halted some critical fire prevention work because of the massive freeze in government funding directed by Donald Trump.

Never forget that Trump was the culmination of 40 years of stagnant wages, widening inequality, corruption, dog-whistle politics, and economic gains for the rich. If we fail to address this, we should expect future Trumps as far as the eye can see.

It may feel like we've seen a lot more wildfire recently, but it's still much less than what those ecosystems have historically produced.

Confidence is rising that a major storm--including heavy precipitation--may affect SoCal later this week (Thu into Fri). There is still uncertainty, but risk of significant (i.e., more than "nuisance"-level) flash flooding/debris flows in recent wildfire zones is growing. #CAwx

The wildfires left neighborhoods choking in ash and toxic air. Residents are demanding answers about the hazards. My colleague Tony Briscoe and I spoke with residents, officials, experts about the hazardous conditions the fires left, and the many unanswered questions www.latimes.com/environment/...

Prescribed burning can reduce the severity and amount of smoke from wildfires that burn those areas later on, even when accounting for smoke from the prescribed burns themselves, according to new analysis of California’s record-breaking 2020 fire season from @soa-mazing.bsky.social etal. 🧪

"The researchers analyzed more than 60,000 fires detected the Aqua and Terra satellites between 2001 and 2020. The Hollywood Reporter asked for 700 words for a special section on the fires they have just published. Something looking at the fire itself. So I repurposed some sentences on 'fire as biology' and gave the notion a long leash. Alas, the title is *not* mine. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/local-n...

Good to see this. At the time, I called out Büntgen assertions as "superficial" and "naive" (www.varsity.co.uk/news/27665) and "mendacious" (www.thetimes.com/uk/environme...). van Eck et al unpack that nicely here: www.nature.com/articles/s44...
