Went to Berwick-upon-tweed a few weeks ago. Had seen it from the train a couple of times and thought it looked pretty, so spent a day there on the way up to Scotland

Our recent NERC funded expedition to study hydrothermal interactions with caldera volcanoes is in the news. Check it out here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... or from about 15 minutes in here www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis.... @noc.ac.uk @ukri.org

This week's volcanic eruption in Iceland bucked trends we've seen at this site for the past year; it's been wild trying to tie the data together. Like many things in science: we don't know what will happen next. But happy to see science funded because lives and livelihoods are at stake.

🧪🌋⚒️ Wait for it ... ( #USGS #kilauea #eruption time lapse): Only 9 of 31 hours of this episode (15) were high fountains, mostly from southern of 2 active vents. Volcanoes can be episodic on min. to yr. timescales. Since 23-Dec-24, we have seen 16 roughly day-long bursts w/ little action between.

I knew that the protective walls they built around Grindavík to protect the village from the lava were big, but I didn't realise just how huge they are. Here seen with trucks and machinery for scale. Photo by Ragnar Visage for RÚV.

It's not like any @royalsociety.org fellows are involved in the dismantling of US science, so this statement is totally not hollow at all 🙄

The fissure that started erupting at Grindavík has opened partly inside the dyke protecting the town 😟. Hopefully when the eruption settles down to a few craters, those will all be outside of the dyke. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqud...

A new eruption has started in #Iceland. Wee bit too close to Grindavík 😬 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqud...

🧪🌋⚒️ thats gassy. super high lava fountaining to 305 m (1000 ft) at Halema‘uma‘u crater, #Kilaue #volcano, this week (26 Mar), during episode 15 of the ongoing eruption. Cumulatively, the eruption has produced quite a tephra blanket around the summit area since Dec 2024. #USGS photo.

Wherever there is a patch of felt reports the Myanmar footprint is showing up as way underestimated. Some combination of mapping liquefaction susceptibility and/or ground motion equations for SE Asia is getting a major overhaul after this event. ⚒️

A comparison of the Sagaing fault map that shows historic earthquake rupture lengths with the USGS slip model of today’s M7.7 #earthquake in Myanmar suggests today’s event may have ruptured the northern half of the 1839 earthquake fault patch. ⚒️🧪

Reports of damage are starting to come out after the earthquake in Myanmar, and it doesn't look good www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

I felt this would be the point where a human would sigh, so I sighed.
