Five Leaves publishing side, events coming up - primarily related to Lincolnshire and our book on folk tales reimagined: lincolnshirefolktalesproject.com/events-workshops/ Not sure why this one is picked out by Bluesky, but check out the list, starting on the 5th March #Lincolnshire #Booksky

Next week Mon fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/dr-tao-leigh-goffe-with-victoria-okoye-in-conversation-on-dark-laboratory-from-columbus-to-the-climate-crisis/ Tues Jake Hall talk cancelled due to illness Wed www.nottingham.ac.uk/hrlc/eventsholding/events-2025/annual-human-rights-conference-2025.aspx

A very Happy St David's Day to our Welsh customers and colleagues. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!

Ramadan Kareem to all our Muslim customers and colleagues

A little video (1 minute or so) about Boff Whalley's book tour. He is coming to ours on March 10th. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYfz...

1/2 Goodness. The bookshop fiction group is discussing Jane Austen's Persuasion in April. Out with the experimental novel, begone translation, weird fantasy is so last century. We're going back another century. Suddenly March's Jenny Erpenbeck's Kairos seems a tad modern, and tonight's short

It's free at the point of delivery and always will be @leftlion.bsky.social March edition in stock

www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/feb/27/i-was-causing-harm-author-helen-jukes-on-motherhood-and-our-polluted-bodies.... some reading ahead of @helenjukes.bsky.social talk here on 18th March fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/mother-animal-with-helen-jukes/

Quite the stack of new paperbacks to start the week....

Sad news from theclaptonpress.com. It's closing down on March 7th, due to the press's owner's illness. Clapton had a growing list of books in translation from South America and Spain, and a number of books on the Spanish Civil War. Mail order and trade customers stock up now while you still can.

Another Brexit bonus! One of our regular card suppliers in Ireland has decided to stop supplying cards to Britain because of customs costs and delays. Another small step towards Brexiteers aim of cutting us off from the world. Rejoin!

For the avoidance of doubt, @lcwinter.bsky.social did pay for the books. Loot indeed though. Or swag if you prefer.

Busy on Bluesky today... @helenjukes.bsky.social called in to sign copies of her book Mother Animal ahead of publication on Thursday and fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/mother-animal-with-helen-jukes/ on March 18. This is a book started when pregnant, about other mothers, human, mammal, insect....

This was the book I couldn't find for International Mother Tongue Day. The main languages mentioned are Malayalam and English, with lovely drawings from Kerela and America. A great book for any child who speaks two languages fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/product/my-mothers-tongues-a-weaving-of-languages/

Big demonstration against Putin and Trump in town today, mostly Ukrainians but also some councillors, shop customers, "Hongkongers for Ukraine" and some from this union branch - both groups regular supporters of Ukraine against Putin's war.

Today we celebrate the right to read. #BooksellingIsNotACrime On Feb 9 Israeli police raided the Educational Bookshop in Jerusalem, seizing books and arresting Palestinian owners Ahmed and Mahmoud Muna. Today we will be donating 10% of takings to the Educational Bookshop.

Because we know how to have a good time, we are joyfully discussing Knut Hamsun's Hunger at our July open fiction book group. fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/five-leaves-open-fiction-book-group-discusses-hunger-by-knut-hamsun/. Oh, God.

1/2 Today is International Mother Language Day, which always makes us wish our shop was bigger to enable us to carry books in languages other than English. We do have some children's books, and a handful of poetry books in dual language. Much to the pleasure of a young customer, who loves scripts

Oops. We did a very successful stall at a Lemn Sissay event last night in Newark. Being generous souls, we sold the hbk. of Let the Light Pour In at £12 rather than £12.99 and the pbk. at £10.00 rather than £10.99. Except the cover price of the latter is £9.99. We owe quite a few people a penny.

Outrage was the book that started it all. Pity our book is no longer available. When it came out, for one week it was the second most reviewed book in the UK. The first was about Mike Tyson. Ours was better.

Thanks @nationalbooktokens.bsky.social for the publicity and for the hamper. There might be a small amount left... but not by tomorrow

46 minutes of a bookseller's life just gone trying to ascertain from BT whether some phone calls we are getting saying they are BT are genuine. We are with BT but their online assistance cannot find our account, our phone number or email address even when we give that account, phone number, email.

We're looking for a part-time bookseller to work Saturdays + 1 or 2 weekdays + events. If you think this is you, please send your CV and a covering letter to [email protected]. 📓📒📕📗📘📙📔

Thanks to Debbie James from Kibworth Bookshop for raising the issue of the East Jerusalem bookshops at the Parliamentary Book Awards, when speaking on behalf of the @babooksellers.bsky.social, our trade association, finishing with #booksellingisnotacrime #booksky

Thread: The East Jerusalem bookshops story continued There is now a fundraiser for the Educational Bookshops (one Arabic and one English) and the shop at the American colony. The two arrestees are forbidden to have anything to do with publishing and bookselling for the moment, how can that be right?

Want to snuggle up this weekend with a slightly *different* Valentine's read? Why not check out our radical reading alternatives? Available to buy at our website or from bookshop.org uk.bookshop.org/lists/radica...? #indiebookshop #valentines #readradically

Only two places left...

Coming soon #booksky

The East Jerusalem bookshop story continued... Ahmad was released late last night and Mahmoud has just been released, though both under house arrest for a week. They each had to pay a 5000 Shekel £1250) fine for the incarcerated, having their rights violated and their shop ransacked.

Our bookshop event this Thursday is fully booked. Tickets will not be available at the door. fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/rebel-music-a-sound-illustrated-talk-by-joe-mulhall/

The arrests of Palestinian booksellers, latest... see below from their publishers and now in the Guardian at www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Thread: We are concerned to hear that Mahmoud Muna of the American Colony and Educational Bookshops in East Jerusalem has been arrested and some of his stock seized. The American Colony is the hotel where senior NGOs, journalists and politicians often stay, and his shop there is a major resource

Last night's talk by Simon Hannah on ecosocialist economic planning draw a good crowd. In the discussion there were nine contributors including a Pole, a Kashmiri, a Palestinian, a Slovenian, an Italian, a Greek. Elsewhere in the room, Portuguese, Spanish, German... Nigel Farage's worst nightmare.

If you are in Nottingham or the environs, me and my book 'Mammals, I Think We Are Called - @saltpublishing.com - will be the guests at the @fiveleavesbooks.bsky.social book group on 27 Feb Info: fiveleavesbookshop.co.uk/events/febru...

Brittany?? All we have for you. We have a dedicated signed copy of The Witch-ionary still to collect. Alternatively, anyone local called Brittany who suddenly realises they need such a book and it is already dedicated!

First two customers of the day, here in Nottingham, both wearing Aston Villa scarves. Nothing football related about their visit. Handshake and a discussion about Richard Dawkins and Cormac McCarthy later, they bought quite unrelated books and left. We now support Aston Villa. Today anyway. #booksky

He made them laugh, he made them cry. Well, laugh anyway
