Working Families is looking for new trustees. The charity does great work, as the Impact Statement shows: workingfamilies.org.uk/wp-content/u... Apply here: workingfamilies.org.uk/about-us/tru...

Normalization Alert! 🚨 @politico.com features a full-on propaganda piece on the far right in its magazine. It is the third piece by the author, a PhD student (!) on US history (in Vienna), who mainly has written in US far-right outlets.

I needed a laugh. This is fully compliant with Bezos's new op-ed rules. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Just watched the Home Counties private schoolboy Nigel Farage telling northern voters how he understands steelworkers because he used to work in the “metals business” himself. He was, ahem, a commodities trader at the London Metal Exchange in the City.

UK real and nominal earnings growth still healthily positive www.ons.gov.uk/employmentan... My most heretical suspicion is that nominal and real pay are strongly positively correlated - a real "run it hot see what happens" thought that should make Treasury types vomit ... Charts to follow 1/

We traded Europe for a guy that builds concentration camps for profit.

Bloomberg now reporting as I did last month that the UK government is ready to sign up for dynamic alignment on food and drink regulations. Though detailed negotiations will be rather challenging. And EU doesn't yet have a mandate. (repost - wrong link 1st time) www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Ecuador’s Noboa re-elected in presidential vote seen as test of his ‘war on drugs’

The President’s unprecedented Executive Order yesterday targeting Messrs. Chris Krebs and Miles Taylor for nothing but the exercise of their First Amendment rights is the President’s most constitutionally corrupt Executive Order to date.

Pink sky over the Brent River Park. It’s about now that we ‘lose’ the sunset, as it moves round to the north-west and disappears behind the houses. It doesn’t reappear until late August. @brentriverpark.bsky.social

🚨 We need your help! A debate on our trading relationship with the EU has been secured by Andrew Lewin MP. We need your MP to attend and drive our message home that closer ties with the EU should be the government’s priority. Email yours now 👇

Check out the latest edition of my @financialtimes.com newsletter. (1/2) How Trump's nostalgia for manufacturing will make America poorer: on.ft.com/3XYfrwv

Trump's economic belligerence is China's global opportunity.

Let's fisk that stupid Times leader on universities shall we? Take this. String of clichés not backed by fact. Nowhere near 50% of school leavers go to university, simply wrong. People are not 'voting with their feet', numbers are going up. Also false. (1/2)

This is quite fun. “America would be better off if more people worked in manufacturing.” • 80% of Americans agree • 20% disagree “I would be better off if I worked in a factory.” • 25% of Americans agree • 73% disagree • 2% currently work in a factory t.co/ycnHVZ1gT1

How China’s record trade surplus helped spark Trump’s tariff war 📊 https://ig.ft.com/china-trade-surplus

A @data.ft.com analysis of the “China shock” shows that employment in China’s labor-intensive manufacturing industries has been declining since 2011. Roles in the textile industry alone shrank 40% from 2011-2019. Now, cheaper have factories moved to Vietnam and Indonesia where exports have surged.

British Steel shut North East site after Richard Tice firm threatened rent hike www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

When life’s buffeting you around but you still manage to keep focussed on the things that matter to you🙃🐭Amazing head stabilisation of our #WarrenFarmNR Kestrel, her tail fans to keep her steady🪶On the UK Amber List of conservation concern, her home here is an LNR in waiting💚

Absolutely batshit quote in @patrickmaguire.bsky.social must-read column on Labour’s thinking about The Current Events

If you are trying to work out why the UK Parliament has been recalled this article is essential reading 👇

Something's got to give, and I would like to propose that it's our property tax system Scrap stamp duty and council tax, introduce an annual tax proportionate to the home's value. Easiest way to tax wealth Landlords pay it, not tenants Represents a cut for 75% of population

The UK is uniquely primed for Land Value Tax – we have the tools.. The Land Registry (HMLR) records all freeholds. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) values property and land. We are ready to go – we just need political courage. See: landvaluetax.co.uk/about-lvt/preparation

Every question about Land Value Tax, and every possible objection, are covered on the web site. Let us know if you find a question or objection NOT covered - we will add it, answer it and send you a FREE, limited edition, luxury quality, enamel "I support Land Value Tax" badge. landvaluetax.co.uk

Huge thanks to everyone who's written to @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social to support his plans to open up the Land Registry - it's been noticed! Just received this letter from MHCLG's Baroness Taylor thanking the many people who've enthusiastically written in, & setting out the next steps 1/

McCarthy & Stone retirement properties: Analysis of 16,000 Land Registry records since 2010 shows that nearly 60% of McCarthy Stone flats that have resold have lost money, leaving their owners £41,000 worse off on average. apple.news/AkY0H7AmaTp6...

Here I disagree. You can discern an ideology however piecemeal and contingent without backfilling a “plan”

Succinct take on the good and bad about Europe. If it doesn’t spend more on defence, though, (and get quicker and cleverer about doing so) it could well be screwed.

This is an excellent read.

✍️I visited British Steel last week - just as workers were discovering that the plant's Chinese owners were effectively planning to starve the blast furnaces to death. It was a strange, unsettling experience. With deep ramifications. Some thoughts: edconway.substack.com/p/the-strang...

That was just a line that stopped me. Much more well worth reading about what’s going on in Scunthorpe in this piece from Ed Conway. If these things really are about national security we should really debate them on those grounds not on a vague mish mash of bad politics and worse economics.

Two years ago, Nigel Farage said the govt shouldn’t step in to help British steelworkers. As with his calls to privatise the NHS and his sucking up to Putin over Ukraine, he can’t escape his record. Labour WILL step in and stand up for British jobs today - and defend the national interest.

These new fangled AI graphics are quite something.

"In economics, things take longer to happen than you think they will, and then they happen faster than they thought they could" Mark Carney, 2019 Jackson Hole gathering, quoting Dornbusch www.kansascityfed.org/documents/69...

Am genuinely unsure if the world would be in a better or worse place if this US Administration were run by mega competent people, or if in fact the chaotic shenanigans at the centre has to some degree saved us all. Example: that ridiculous tariff formula surely damaged their strategy...1/
