The terminology "scaling test-time compute" feels kind of benchmark-brained. Sure you can think 100x longer for 3 more points on the AIME, but for ambiguous/open-ended problems are you going to do that?

o1 (like all LLMs) is like the horse Clever Hans, it picks up subtle cues to guess the answer from the questioner who already knows the answer. If you ask o1 "how do you know that _?" it answers X, if you ask it "are you sure that _?" it answers ¬X.
