I already have a thread with this year's Newbery books, but Magnolia Wu by Chanel Miller is such a remarkable book it deserves its own. On reading the blurb--10 year-old sock detective--I thought that it would be a light, fun, quirkfest. It is that, but it's so much more!

Some people will look at this and only see how foolish it is. But what it also is an attempt to set up a blameless, unaccountable arbiter by inserting automation into a “decision making” process. And tbh I wish more people at more news outlets would call that out.
