Join us at #CHI2025 for the Transnational lgbTq+ SIG! Wed. April 30 11:10am-12:40pm. A SIG is basically a time and space at the conference for community-building and support for trans and queer CHI attendees (and allies!). with @snapdragoness.bsky.social, @fractalecho.bsky.social, @amyko.phd +++

Hello from Yokohama ❤

About to set off for #CHI2025!

Hey! I posted an edited transcript version of the talk I've been giving about uncomfortable abundances and game design enclosure, for those who hate hearing human voices (I agree): emreed.net/Reframing_Ab...

The Critical AI Puppetry Zine you never knew you wanted! Emma Wiseman, @camilagalaz.bsky.social, @isilitke.bsky.social & I spent a week with actors at the Mercury Store to consider puppetry metaphors to critique & reframe Generative AI’s choreography of its users. Now it’s a zine! #criticalai

BRIEFS IS BACK! The open call is NOW! The theme is CHEESE! Think 1500 EUR to make a short game! Think jam-sized, like 40 hours to make it over a couple months. Pitch your game and get that cheese. Apply until 22nd of May! www.goldextra.com/en/briefs-20... #indiedev #gamedev #art

seems relevant to the discussion...

You can already register for the hybrid workshop on multisensory approaches to palaces in Bronze and Iron Ages! Program follows! #archaeology #bronzeage #ironage #egypt #neareast #aegean #multisensory #interdisciplinary #egyptology

Huge donation will help The Strong preserve the history of defunct Saints Row developer Volition

I heard you like zines

Submit now: CfP for our next Special Issue "BEYOND PLAY: THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF DIGITAL GAMING IN A DEEPLY MEDIATIZED SOCIETY" is out now! Abstract submission deadline: 31.05.2025 journals.suub.uni-bremen.de/index.php/ga... #gamevironments #gaming #academics #cfp

This sounds so fun! I love that genre of game where you have to make up stories to win the approval of a specific audience. (When I put it like that, well duh, of course I love it!)

My Bathysphere essay this week: "Choose Your Own Item Description." Inspired by my love of archaeological object biographies, I wrote about how I want to see more games that challenge you to come up with back stories for items (and curate them too!) buttondown.com/Bathysphere/...

Been obsessed with the concept for this album ever since I first heard about it

I heard you were having a pretty rough time in 2025 and could use some human brain fun. I got you. Microscope: Chronicle, a fractal game of histories and people. Public playtest downloadable right now. GMless as hell. arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/45...

I'll be presenting the paper "Archaeological Gameworld Affordances: A Grounded Theory of How Players Interpret Environmental Storytelling" at #CHI2025 next Monday 28th in the Games session at 11:20am! You can check out the preprint here: kclpure.kcl.ac.uk/portal/en/pu...

For those who will be at #CHI2025, hope you can join us for the CHI Queers Meetup! It will be on Monday 4/28 at a space near the conference. RSVP: tinyurl.com/chiqueers

Even if everyone in the entire world was using genAI to do research I'd still be doing it myself because it's what I live for

Cool to see devs from Square Enix, Capcom, Sega and Taito all sharing their game preservation work at SIGGRAPH, and reporting on it too!

Reimbursement

BTW if you, like me, enjoy taking notes on puzzle games visually, I cannot recommend Pureref (www.pureref.com) enough. Infinite canvas, lets you paste in images and and crop and annotate them. I used it for both Blue Prince and Tunic and had no regrets

Many people are saying: where is the Conclave larp? Think of the pageantry, the intrigue, the clothes, the vape pens! Good news: there are already multiple Papal conclave larps, including @adapalmer.bsky.social's epic annual event at the University of Chicago, and Willow Parecek's 2018 game!

Wow I saw the words "gay archaeologists" and this book was somehow instantly in my basket ready to check out?

know this isn't really a surprising or hot take, but Caves of Qud is not just a game of the year but of the decade, and there are so many reasons, but one of them is the texture it gets from dense collections of adjectives and nouns, each with specific game Meanings but also carrying poetic weight

Super excited to get my copy of the book Fotoludica, which includes @mtrc.bsky.social and I's essay "The Dark Souls of Archaeology: Recording Elden Ring" translated into Italian!

Uh oh

📖My book is out! My book Mytholudics: Games and Myth is now available. In it, I propose a way of understanding and analysing games as and through myth. @degruyterbrill.bsky.social doi.org/10.1515/9783...

Hey, remember Kinder, Küche, Kirche?

my #solo #epistolary #journaling #ttrpg (wtf) ghostbox is complete. the layout is amazing. the illustrations are beautiful. the text is coherent and consistent. it's done, it's wonderful, it's everything you ever wanted from a game. please check it out.

Fairy Tale, Paul Klee 1929

I pitched Unwinnable on doing an AI issue last year and this is the result! This month we all wrote about gen AI (derogatory)

Yeah, to be clear I don't even think this is necessarily a bad thing if you're aware of it! It can even be a strength of a game if it's capable of spurring this. I enjoy a lot of games for how I can fill in the gaps myself and create stories out of what's there.

More writing on note taking and Blue Prince

Again, begging my colleagues in the archaeology and classical studies fields to stop entertaining and working with Tom Holland.

Are you interested in Gaming Landscapes and Environmental Storytelling? Because we are, too! Check out our Call For Papers for this year's VGC conference: videogamecultures.org/2025-call-fo...
