NIH funding is frozen. @annikabarber.bsky.social is keeping score: 50%+ of study sections planned for this year (77/148) have been cancelled. I talked to Dr. Barber about why these delays are disastrous, and why scientists should be pooling info and speaking up: www.chronicle.com/article/nih-...

An UG student in my lab participated in SIP and is now doing a PhD. I've judged posters for their research festival, and recommended it to many more. It is an incredible program. This is such a shame 😞

The number of students that this funding would impact and financial need will be considered

Never in my most pessimistic moments did I expect the response to modern biotechnology saving countless lives in a pandemic to be a powerful elite captured by a conspiracy theory and dismantling our defenses against the next one out of some misguided notion of revenge

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

Contacted my congress folks again, are you tired of hearing from me yet

Good morning from the middle of a coup. Take your meds. Invite a friend out. Hugs your kids. Fight back. Deny consent. Talk about what is happening. Organize locally.

To all those receiving layoff notices from the Trump-Musk Admin, know that we stand with you and are working with our legal partners and in Congress to fight back and right these wrongs. If you want to report what you're seeing or experiencing, you can share your story here:

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Howard University is now a R1 university, the first HBCU with a research one designation. H-U definitely knows!

Have received a lot of questions about how to find these protests and rallies in the DC area. The Movement Infrastructure Project is a great resource. www.movementinfrastructureproject.org/calendar

*taps mic* I was a postbacc IRTA (NIDDK) and later a postdoc (NINDS). The training I got at the NIH was incredibly important in my career trajectory. I recommend the postbacc programs to ALL my undergrads who are looking into post-grad work. The folks who run the postbacc programs are incredible 1/n

am so used to leaving messages on the congress people's voicemail that I was startled when an actual human answered the phone this time. they were very nice.

Did not watch the super bowl (not a fan of football. but go Birds, anyways). Did watch the half-time show on youtube the day after, as usual. That was amazing.

Thoughts for the US scientific community drugmonkey.scientopia.org/2025/02/07/t...

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

The MBL remembers and celebrates the outstanding legacy of Ernest Everett Just, the first African American to study and work at the Marine Biological Laboratory. Just was an internationally respected researcher who published more than 70 scientific articles in his career. Read more: bit.ly/4gguh7S

The House Science Committee is now adopting its rules, authorization, and oversight plan, and introducing their new staffers. Immediately following, there will be a hearing on the future of U.S. science with the president of AAAS and two former Trump officials in academia and Trump operative.

Jesus, the REAP call has been canceled - new expiration date 2.3.2025 (original expiration date 1.7.2028)

SOME GOOD NEWS ABOUT NIH FUNDING Closed sessions of institute and center Advisory Counsel meetings are now permitted. This is where grant applications are discussed and approved for potential funding. Open sessions where there are public presentations and discussions are still not allowed.

Ah, the millennial experience of “every time you get some measure of financial and career stability, the world decides to do something extraordinarily stupid again”

We we just talking about this last night: What is the obsession over groups of people that are ~1% of the population, just trying to live their life? How insecure do you have to be in your being to be threatened by 1% of the population? My god get a hobby.

I know that Trans Youth Emergency Project could use donations. Perhaps they even need some volunteers. southernequality.org/tyep/

It is very easy to call your representatives’ offices. They have to log your calls and the call numbers are meaningful. You don’t even have to try to convince anyone; just call and tell them your concerns. They are there to represent you. Let them know what that means. www.usa.gov/elected-offi...

My MD representation at work. I appreciate the 3 of them. Obviously, NIH is in their jurisdiction. But, I'm really glad to see them leading on this.

This reminds me a bit of govt' shutdowns in the past: essential employees could come in and take care of the flies (fly stocks require a monthly change of food, at minimum). The reasoning being that if we let the animals die, it might be destruction of federal property. 1/n

Applying by 2/3/25 is a small time-investment given the potential positives for your undergraduate classes. An additional upside for participants— becoming part of a professional network with shared experiences & aspirations. Community support is always important during challenging times.
