"[The Barn Owl's] shriek is still a bad omen; if it perches on a house to screech, it is a certain sign of death, and if it is heard at a birth, the child will be unlucky all its life." - Christina Hole, 'English Folklore' #BookWormSat #superstition #tradition #birds #owl #omens

24 tickets left to see Quentin, Comfrey and Jago on the big screen in Liverpool May 14th FACT gallery. www.fact.co.uk/film/qtv-arc...

Morning. Puffin Flying, Floy Zittin.

I walked along the canal today trying to find the boat of Trippy Pete. There wasn't a whisper of him, just water folk keen to pass on sightings of the Empress Eel at swimming, tales Stay Belows still hungry from a winter spent sleeping in the mud. The cut's current is folklore. – #MattAdams

While working on Something Else (TBA 😉), I ended up exploring an interesting tangent: the road movie as a distinctly American type of folk horror. I started with movies from the 60s and 70s, but it goes beyond that. Are there some films (of any era) that you would add to the list?

Thanks to @momoshaty.bsky.social & @nighttidemag.bsky.social for running this piece! As you make your summertime travel plans, make sure the tourist destination you have in mind is still in the domain of the living… nighttidemag.com/2025/04/25/m...

My favourite children's book (even allowing for the 20-odd #DoctorWho Target paperbacks I had filling up a shelf in my bedroom!). Cover by the wonderful Anthony Maitland, who also did most of the Leon Garfield covers. #FolkHorror #Hookland #legend #fantasy #fantasyfiction #childrensbooks

🌿🪶🌿"The robin flew from his swinging spray of ivy on to the top of the wall and he opened his beak and sang a loud, lovely trill, merely to show off. Nothing in the world is quite as adorably lovely as a robin when he shows off." 📖The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett. #BookWormSat

As an author of what many call 'horror', let me tell you no being casts a more abhorrent shadow than man. No creature is more monstrous. For those of our kind that hunt for pleasure and live among dead-eyed trophies, we must hope a reckoning of ghosts awaits them. – #CLNolan

#BookwormSat I recently came across a copy of 'A bird book for the pocket' by Edmund Sandars (1943 edition) and picked it up for the author's charming illustrations, but when I got it home and examined it properly found more personal treasures from its history within too.

A sad fact: one of the last Great auks in the world was beaten to death on the Scottish island of St Kilda in 1840 because some locals who caught it thought it was a storm-conjuring witch.

I missed #StGeorgesDay, but what the heck: here's St George vs. #Tyrannosaurus for #FossilFriday. You don't have to look hard for the Paolo Uccello reference, but this Tyrannosaurus looks to be giving St. George a tougher time than the dragon in his painting. #paleoart #sciart #dinosaur

Happy St Mark's Eve, It was the custom in villages in England on April 24th to sit in the church porch in silence from 11.00 p.m. until the bell struck 1.00 a.m. when it was said that the ghosts of those who were to die during the year would be seen coming into the church.

It is St. Marks Eve and Little Mari is ensuring the ghostly procession are guided and provided ghost toast as a snack

For #Easter, a #Roman metal brooch in the shape of a rabbit (or hare), with traces of its original enamel decoration still adding a splash of colour. Animal-themed jewellery was popular in the Roman world, especially brooches 🐇 AncientBlueSky #Archaeology #RomanArchaeology #HappyEaster

So, I'm looking for a publisher who would be interested in my unthemed anthology of weird tales - sixteen in all, the stories are all 150+ years old, have NEVER been reprinted and eight are by female authors, INCLUDING a lost Flora Annie Steel short story, which is very exciting. DM's open!

I'm glad for this article - those that vilify gulls usually do because of sheer ignorance. Gulls aren't the problem, they are just animals trying to survive in the landscape we've created. Try to understand them and have compassion.

Tonight is St Mark's Eve, when, according to English #folklore, if you sit in a church porch tonight and stay silent from 11 pm to 1 am you will see a procession of the ghosts of all the people in the village who will die during the coming year.
