Peek-a-boo (or should we say pee-ku-du?) Greater kudu are a shy species that prefers to spend daylight hours resting and grazing. They're most active at dawn and dusk!

Did you know kestrels migrate through Texas during the winter? We've been lucky to witness the amazing hunting behaviors of this tiny raptor all season!

Black-footed cats are a wild cat endemic to southern Africa. Despite their tiny size, they are incredibly skillful hunters, with the highest success rate of any wild cat species.

Black-footed cats are an elusive species even in human care, so many of our observations come from game camera footage. Here we are able to watch mom, Bandit, interact with her two kittens.

We are very proud to announce that Naia, our 18-year old black-footed cat, is now the oldest of her kind in the United States, and quite possibly the oldest in the world! She is now 6 months shy of being the oldest recorded BFC in history, so here's to good health and more happy birthdays to come!

We’re halfway through Friday! Take a cue from our sable calves and streeetch it out 🙆‍♀️

Did you know rhinos are born without horns? Their horns are made of keratin, much like our fingernails, and begin growing after birth. They'll keep growing for the rest of their lives!

Xena has a BIG surprise to share! Meet Turbo, our newest Southern white rhino calf! Turbo was born in November 2024, and has been doing great with his mom behind the scenes 🦏

This cold weather has the wildebeest feeling frisky ❄️ large herds of wildebeest rely on dominance displays in order to determine hierarchy!

Cheetahs are a notoriously picky species when it comes to mating, which creates a puzzle for conservationists. Vice News visited us in 2020 to learn more about how we help cheetahs find love ❤️

Heart-nosed babies to get you feeling warm and fuzzy on Valentine's Day! Left: waterbuck, right: roan antelope. 😍

Cheetahs are more closely related to cougars and jaguarundi than to other “big cats” like lions and tigers. They can’t roar, and instead communicate through purrs, growls and chirps!

Cheetahs spend over 50% of their day sleeping! This conserves their energy and helps them avoid the hottest hours of the day.

Aquatic antelope? In your swampland? It's more common than you might think

This Nile lechwe calf is experimenting with eating solids! In the wild, lechwes are great swimmers, and enjoy eating aquatic plants that grow in the shallows of the Nile river.

The “e” in cheetah stands for evil 😈

Porcupines are a mainly nocturnal animal, as demonstrated by Poppy, our North American porcupine. She spends her nights climbing, exploring, and chewing to file down her large front incisors!

Babies gotta stick together! This greater kudu calf has found a friend in an eastern mountain bongo calf. Both herds live in the same pasture and have similar temperaments.

Scimitar horned oryx get their name from, you guessed it.... their horns! There are four oryx species, but scimitars are the only ones whose horns curve, and at full length look like a scimitar sword.

This Scimitar horned oryx mom didn't want ANY unruly teenagers or aunties messing with her new baby. In the wild, these critically endangered antelope will do their best to defend their calves from danger.

Posting to mark International Zebra Day! 📍Akagera National Park, Rwanda.

In late 2023, Fossil Rim welcomed a Hartmann's Mountain zebra calf. It was the first of its kind born in over a decade at our facility, and one of only four born at any zoo last year.

It's International Zebra Day!! Let's celebrate the stripiest among us with a fun fact thread!

🧧Happy Lunar New Year 🧧 from our favorite snake, Kingsley! She is a California kingsnake, a common North American species. Snakes represent regeneration by shedding their past skin. Despite the red color of this holiday, when Kingsley gets ready to shed her skin, it’s called being “in blue.”

When you have an entire enclosure plus a heated bedroom but they all lack a toe rest

Anthropologists are often tasked with identifying wildlife in ancient art. Dama gazelles are one often represented species in prehistoric rock art, like this piece from Niger. (Rock art photo by Karl Heinz Striedter)

In 1992, the first white rhino calf born at Fossil Rim was named Laptop! What would you name a baby rhino?

You have something to say about roan antelope? We're all ears!

Rocket and his mom Ursula have been practicing sparring lately! The one-year-old calf will stay by mom’s side for at least another year until he’s fully weaned 🦏

By the end of the 1950's, there were only 12 Przewalski's horses left. Thanks to major conservation efforts, their numbers have been boosted to over 2,000- all descents of those final 12!

Have you heard of the P-horse? Przewalski's (pronounced shuh-vaal-skees) horses are the only truly wild horse species left on earth. All other "wild" horses are decedents of feral domesticated species. Domestic horses and p-horses differ genetically, having diverged over 30,000 years ago!

Who knew you feed giraffes in the middle of Texas? 🤷‍♀️ A highlight of our visit was the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center!

Went to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center yesterday, had a blast seeing all the critters and getting pictures of them. Have a couple I felt turned out best!

In an effort to optimize our social media strategy, we've hired this giraffe to search through your feed and then look at you like this. hope this helps.

"blue sky?" Yeah, we know something about that
