It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up.

“Why don’t you say thank you”

Not since Prohibition have so many Americans wanted to commit the same crime at once

I'll be talking "Band People" at the University of Essex (Colchester campus) on Monday 5pm... www.essex.ac.uk/events/2025/...

We chatted with Franz Nicolay, member of #TheHoldSteady, and author of the illuminating book "Band People" about "the character actors of music." Check it out! 🎵 ministryofpopculture.substack.com/p/whats-it-r...

Meade Lux Lewis’ Xmas card

April shows in UK and Ireland!

Apart from that, other than the as-per-usuals, what are we harping on?

Now up on Beat Connection, a new Waves Around post--this one is a Q&A, conducted last October at St. Paul's Subtext Books, with @franznicolay.bsky.social about his great book Band People. For paying subscribers--enjoy! michaelangelo.substack.com/p/wa004-fran...

Depends on your views on the Hapsburgs

To revisit Hofstadter now is both to be amazed at the prescience and lucidity but also to be dismayed that his conclusion is “luckily, these guys are losers and will never achieve real power”

Hey thanks @sad13.horse !

Siouxsie and the band’s cheese

My kids love Buster Keaton movies, which is awesome; but they really like "The General," which is complicated ("Who are the bad guys?")

I missed this earlier, but @isaacfitzgerald.bsky.social on the Today Show's "Open Book" podcast named BAND PEOPLE a "Best Book of 2024" (around 31:00): "beautiful, reverent—there's so much love for [musicians], while at the same time being so practical." podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b...

for all the (deserved) press that Liz Pelly's Spotify book is garnering, don't forget Eric Drott's "Streaming Music, Streaming Capital," which is as close to a one-stop shop for the political economy of streaming as one could hope for www.dukeupress.edu/streaming-mu...

Best essay I’ve read on Garth Hudson. Take your time reading it. Well worth it.

This is just a fantastic tribute.

if you care about the band at all you simply must read this

One of the best things I've ever read not just on Garth but on the Band, period. Look forward to multiple re-reads. Music writing of this caliber really gives me hope. (Thanks to @jonbern.bsky.social for the heads-up.)

What an absolutely gorgeous piece. Enjoyed reading this like you wouldn't believe

The extended Garth Hudson “accounting of touring as a series of chairs”

This is wonderful music writing about the brilliant Garth Hudson

A beautiful tribute to an unreal talent. Additionally, every eulogy should answer the question - were they into orgies? 'Jonathan Taplin, the Band’s former road manager, put it more simply: “Garth was not an orgy guy,”'

This is the best piece of writing on Garth Hudson I've ever read. There are so many threads to follow but includes so much of what is compelling about The Band and Hudson's playing.

A must-read for any fan of the greatest Canadian-American band of all time (sorry Mynah Birds)

Read this, it's excellent.

An absolutely wonderful, honest, heartfelt tribute to Garth Hudson from @franznicolay.bsky.social. (And if you haven't read Franz's "Band People", do so immediately. And then his novel "Someone Should Pay for Your Pain," which I was lucky enough to host an event for in 2021. All just terrific.)

Wonderful piece. ..

This was fantastic
