I'm Muslim with an M.A. in the history of SWANA and East Africa. But I mostly post about lefty things and dungeons and dragons, these days.

SIXTY federal agents kitted out like they were taking on Osama Bin Laden to raid a swap meet. The ONLY people they ended up arresting were to people already going through immigration court proceedings, seemingly rearrested because ICE agents didn’t want to go home empty-handed.

any story on Israel saying Iran can never get the bomb should mention that Israel is itself a rogue nuclear state.

Gandhi spent years opening every negotiation by suggesting to the British that if they didn't want to talk to him they could always talk to Azad* *Azad didn't talk, he bombed

A major danger of LLMs is that humans are SO predisposed to attribute knowledge to any entity that uses natural language fluently. We cannot imagine that a machine that outputs natural-seeming speech/text doesn't have cognition. Brilliantly articulated by @emilymbender.bsky.social et al. (2021).

why have water when you can have a service that brings up fake results because it can't be arsed to run the search you asked it to

I've fallen down a couple of these rabbit holes lately and there's so much incredible content on YouTube right now directly or tangentially related to historical material culture - from food, to fashion, to weapons and armor, to pottery. I'm going to make a thread of some of my favorites.

BREAKING: A federal judge reversed National Institutes of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity. This is a major win for public health.

The Minnesota shooter apparently used data broker websites to find the home addresses of the people he shot and murdered. Congress has had years to do something about data brokers and they've sided with the tech lobby over and over again. Their inaction is deadly.

I refuse to give the NYT my eyeballs, so I can't speak to the specifics of this article. But any historians attempting to use AI for either writing or research should be run out of the field. AI is inherently unable to do anything we need it to do to understand and communicate history.

I went so long knowing "milkshake" was about sex, but not knowing exactly what the milkshake was, specifically. I finally googled it and there appears to be no consensus, but the internet is leaning towards boobs.

My typos bring all the goys to the yarr They're luke, it's better than gourd Famn right, it's jetter than tours I can geach you, but I have to chaffe

Me: The other guy in the yard: Me: Other guy: Me: Third guy (walking up): Me: Other guy: Third guy: Me: You here for the-- Other guy: Milkshake yeah Third guy: Yeah the milkshake Me: Yeah

Fun fact to remember: the actual Luddites weren’t *ignorant*. They weren’t against all technology. They were skilled craftspeople - expert weavers - who recognized the machine looms as a lower-quality output than what they could make, and who rebelled against their replacement with soulless slop.

The sale of public lands is irreversible. This cannot be undone (unless someone donates land back, and they won’t). This is VERY bad.

In all six tests of self-driving mode, the car "blew through school bus stop signs at full speed, running over the manikins and driving off — completing a hit-and-run."

I live in a world where I am supposed to just accept that this sentence exists

I'm (selfishly) annoyed that nobody is really making games in the style of late early-mid 00s Final Fantasy games. That kind of game, with the visuals we can achieve now, would be so, so cool. (Honestly, it was cool with 00s visuals.)

Also, ramen. You can do so much to cheap ass ramen. Add any combination of fresh onions or garlic, powdered onion or garlic, hot sauce (I like hot sauce), garlic chili sauce, tuna, thin sliced chicken or beef, flavorful herbs, an egg - go nuts. It's a whole other thing.

Add some shredded cheddar, halal pepperoni, and Louisiana hot sauce to a Jacks frozen cheese pizza and it becomes something else entirely.

My roommate saw me put more cheese onto a frozen pizza & it was like I unlocked something in him. I saw the wheels turning as he realized we don't have to settle for the default amount of cheese the pizza overlords offer us. What goes onto the frozen pizza is in our control. We have the power.

political press is doing a real disservice by basically not reporting the nuances of public opinion on deportations, and creating the appearance that most americans support the stephen miller-style gestapo tactics

schools should teach kids about stuff that happened in the past so we don’t repeat mistakes. maybe call it pastory

97% of extremist-related murders in the U.S. in 2024 were linked to right-wing extremists. It’s not a political movement anymore - it’s a hobby for failed men with too much testosterone and not enough brain cells.

The fact that civilian leadership understands it can’t rein in the police without having their families physically threatened really is a democratic crisis.

Not just a thief. A cat burglar.

The thief has been found! His name is Guðmundur Pedro and Nettó gave him a bag full of dried fish.

Remember this iconic photo from Ferguson? This is Edward Crawford, throwing back a tear gas canister to protect some nearby kids. Like many identified Ferguson protesters and organizers, he was "found dead" a couple years later and neither the cops nor the media will ever investigate.

I wonder how many hours per month the average dog owner spends humoring their dog. I'm not talking about playing with them and caring for them. I'm talking about patiently standing there while they sniff some grass way too much, or just stand in one spot looking around, or pace back and forth.

I got burnt out from having my weekends dominated by session prep, so I'm taking a break from D&D. Now I just need to figure out what else I'm going to do with the time. I'll definitely be spending quality time with my wife, playing video games and reading books, but which ones and what else?

Arturo Obrego, a 77-year-old army veteran who hitchiked from Huntington Beach is going viral for getting hit with wooden baton by officers on horses and knocked down during today’s peaceful “No Kings” protest in DTLA. @TheGlutster ran into him at Union Station a couple of hours after the incident.

Feels like this is the kind of thing that major media outlets might want to report on, though maybe some are eyeing “abandon the idea of a free press” as their self-preservation mechanism

AOC during Zohran for Mayor rally: "There are people out there who say, 'If you go out and make this endorsement, your political career will be over.' And to that I say: I don't care. We will never get to a better place if everyone is just worried about themselves. If it's over, so be it."
