Misconceptions and lack of info about #clinicaltrials are big barriers to participation. Research tells us only 3-5% of cancer patients participate in clinical trials and over 50% of Americans report that lack of awareness and lack of info are major reasons. 1/8

Congratulations to Maggie Russell @magdalenarussell.bsky.social for graduating from @mcbseattle.bsky.social with a phenomenal thesis. I will retell the story of her thesis through images from her papers. 🧵 (Here we are with Phil Bradley, who co-advised Maggie.)

Our new study in Blood! We show that tractable peripheral blood monocyte-based gene expression signatures can detect IL-17- and CSF-1-dysregulated cGVHD and are detectable in patients. This could lead to rational therapy selection. ashpublications.org/blood/articl...

Thank you for fun Microscopy Monday! We chatted chimerism with Helen from @fredhutch.bsky.social and looked at 30million year old insects in amber! Thank you @floatingbentobox @dialjess.bsky.social @stitchandsoil @morganafreya.bsky.social 1/2

Just wrapped up an incredible @binaytara.bsky.social GI Oncology Summit in Honolulu! Thanks to Dr. Teruo Yamauchi for his keynote on cancer care access and Dr. David Zhen of @fredhutch.bsky.social for his leadership. #CancerCare #GIONcology #Hawaii

Biomarker testing helps diagnose and treat diseases like cancer, but it's expensive and not covered by all insurance. For Kaelyn Lukson, it led to a life-saving treatment. WA House Bill 1062 aims to require insurance coverage for biomarker testing. bit.ly/41sjGTh

Excited to share a recent preprint by Oliver Newsom, where we evaluate the functional contributions of serum for cancer cell proliferation. Inside: A broadly applicable serum-free media, Quantitative lipid uptake characterization, Evidence lipid scavenging > synthesis for cancer cell proliferation.

Next, our 2nd preprint of the week (!), this one driven by @madelouhart.bsky.social Previously: Mitochondrial inhibition impairs cell proliferation by constraining aspartate (ASP) availability. Here: we investigate the kinetics of ASP depletion/ proliferation impairments and...surprises ensue!

Researchers from Fred Hutch and @mdanderson.bsky.social have used a new technique that directly measures gene transcription activity from DNA to show that hyper-elevated levels of RNA Polymerase II are associated with tumor aggressiveness. www.insideprecisionmedicine.com/topics/oncol...

NIH support enables @fredhutch.bsky.social to translate research from our labs into care at patient bedsides and ensures we can continue to provide world-class therapies to 40,000+ patients each year. Thank you @repdelbene.bsky.social for championing federal biomedical research funding in Congress.

Thank you, @repdelbene.bsky.social, for your support of NIH funding in Congress! We were grateful to have you at Fred Hutch to tour our research facilities and discuss how vital federal biomedical research funding is in turning lab discoveries into life-saving cures.

“Liquid biopsy tests were pioneered in pregnancy health research and is now an emerging research area in oncology,” said co-corresponding author Dr. Gavin Ha. “There are similarities in the genes we’re looking at in both areas of research.” #oncsky

Using a new technology and computational method, researchers led by 🇺🇸 @fredhutch.bsky.social and 🇺🇸 @mdanderson.bsky.social have uncovered a #biomarker capable of accurately predicting the aggressiveness of #meningioma brain tumors and invasive #breastcancer.

Both superstars! I look forward to an excellent meeting. @fredhutch.bsky.social

Engaging talk by Jen Adair @fredhutch.bsky.social Tandem2025 @astct.bsky.social on efforts to make cell and gene therapy available in low and middle income countries. Academic centers need to step up. Great to see my friend @cgtgaithersburg.bsky.social in the Global Gene Therapy Initiative

#tandem25 #leusm Gang: this study from the @fredhutch.bsky.social looked at 207 adults undergoing allo in CR1/CR2 and who had high quality MPFC MRD positivity pre allo. Majority underwent MAC. Median fup 5yr. Relapse 65% with 3yr OS 34%. No sig diff between MAC and RIC.

Interesting results presented by Elizabeth Krantz from @joshhillmd.bsky.social team @fredhutch.bsky.social @astct.bsky.social Tandem2025. Overall antibody levels are low in CAR T recipients. Re-vaccination is important. The Boonya lab collaborated on the B cell analysis.

There’s been much discussion about CAR T for severe autoimmune disease, incl. lupus & MS. What can we learn about how that might work from patients who have both cancer & autoimmune disease and get B-/plasma-cell directed CAR T?
