Incredibly proud to be presenting at my first HA conference this year. I'll be talking about teaching sensitive histories of exploitation and violence in the KS3 classroom. www.history.org.uk/events/news/...

What a great lineup of speakers for the SHPdeveloping teachers conference...you cannot put a price on this kind of expertise and training but if you were, 35 quid for an early bird is an absolute bargain!

Imho, an enquiry on enslavement that doesn't have at least one local lesson is incomplete. Students need to connect the global to the local.

@oblaize.bsky.social showed this photo at the @1972shp.bsky.social conference 2024 as a way to disrupt the traditional narratives around Rosa Parks. So good to share and discuss it with y11 in our lesson on Black Power today. A picture can change everything and this one certainly did.

The government is suggesting a 2.8 percent UNFUNDED pay rise. Such a disappointing piece of news which suggests the government either does not understand the problems facing schools, or does not care. Excellent state education is an investment in nation, economy and equity.

This looks ace!

📅Day 3: Rates of suspension are at their highest level since public records began. #EPIAdventCalendar

Tomorrow is the first Yorkshire History Forum, ran by @1972shp.bsky.social. Privilege to be involved with my colleague Danielle. She created a sensational SOW on the Miner's strikes, including her own interviews with a former miner allowing the unit to move between general and particular throughout.

Last chance...it will be worth it!!

Today, I begin our study of transatlantic enslavement with Y8. To start, we do a lesson on the history of enslavement, visiting multiple places and times. Eventually, students will see that the scale, brutality and racist justifications of transatlantic ensavement are unique - uncomparable.

So true, and we are so happy to share our work on the miners strikes in South Yorkshire. We must help our students see that history happened where they live, and help them discover how the national stories they learn connect to the local. store.leedstrinity.ac.uk/product-cata...

Just 3 days left to get your ticket for the #yorkshire #history forum! 4 magnificent workshops on local history for primary and secondary history teachers - high quality CPD at bargain basement prices! store.leedstrinity.ac.uk/product-cata...

We are working hard to make human impact on the environment a thread in our lessons. Here is an example of how we discusd medieval attitudes to coal polution! Want to know more about how we teach about coal, mining and the miners strikes? See you at the Yorkshire History Forum!! See below for deets.

After careful thought, we are changing a level paper 1 from Tudors to Empire. So many reasons why. Tudors will become coursework focus. Any advice from people who already do this course?

Still time to join us! I'll share details of my presentation in the next day or two :)

diana-award.org.uk/get-involved... Open letter to the PM regarding the impacts of racism on youngsters of colour in light of Race Equalities Act and Curriculum review. The letter includes several sensible, urgent and practical demands which should not be in anyway controversial to the government.

Always crucial for us to remember that while diversity is a really important quality in a curriculum, unthinking, shallow diversity can be an issue. It can even reinforce the problems we are trying to solve! This is why I feel that diversity must be part of a decolonial framework.

I don't think there is anything wrong with choosing an online space which is kind, polite and full of ppl share your worldview. However, the space where we can all have an impact remains reality, and through actions, not posts.

A great response from @histassoc.bsky.social. Still uncomfortable that while teachers clearly value autonomy, so many are constrained by "alignment" through MAT-wide curriculums @ KS3. Local history, decoloniality and department-level planning in grave peril. www.history.org.uk/secondary/ca...

Two weeks to go...

Thankfully, bell hooks travels with me and reminds me of what I do an why. "Education is always a vocation rooted in hopefulness. As teachers, we believe that learning is possible, that nothing can keep an open mind from seeking after knowledge and finding a way know."

Not long now until Yorkshire History Forum returns to Leeds Trinity. Don’t forget to grab your tickets before they are gone. Absolutely stellar evening lined up for Primary and Secondary #historyteacher s. Tickets via store.leedstrinity.ac.uk/product-cata... #edusky #primary

Back in the day, SHP's Yorkshire History Forum was a thriving community of history teachers from the county. Now, thanks to @danlyndon.bsky.social and @1972shp.bsky.social, IT IS BACK. Honoured to be involved and very excited to about the first one on 28th November. Lets speak history to power.
