ā€œTrading away the credibility of CBS’s news division to curry favor w/the Trump Administration is an improper and reckless act that will irreparably damage the company..," says Abbe Lowell, who is working w/ @normeisen.bsky.social to help @freedom.press' legal case. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

Prominent attorneys Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen joined the Freedom of the Press Foundation's campaign to thwart efforts by Paramount to reach a settlement with President Trump over his "60 Minutes" lawsuit.

@freedom.press news from our front ā¬‡ļø - so proud of our org - These lawyers should scare the shit out of them - www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

We’re doing this because Paramount helping Trump capture the free press and weaken the rule of law would harm everyone — Paramount, its shareholders and America as a whole. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

Texas lawmakers ā€œwant to crack down on college students’ pro-Palestinian protests so badly that they literally passed a prohibition on talking.ā€ Seriously. @freedom.press’s @caitlinvogus.bsky.social and Jimena Pinzon write about the ā€œunconstitutional and absurd billā€ in @houstonchronicle.com.

As the First Amendment famously says, the government shall make no law restricting freedom of speech during the daytime www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/outl...

Texas is about to ban talking on college campuses at night. Seriously. Read the rest of this op-ed by Jimena Pinzon and @freedom.press' @caitlinvogus.bsky.social:

The Trump admin plans to investigate leaks to the press of news it would rather keep secret. To learn more about past government efforts to out reporters’ sources and what journalists should expect, we spoke to @ryanlizza.bsky.social and Pulitzer Prize winner James Risen.

Reporters can’t control what time news happens. Under this reasoning, journalists who pass a closed city park at night and observe police beating or shooting someone couldn’t enter the park to cover it. That can’t be the law.

Trump's Paramount lawsuit is "ridiculously frivolous," @seth-stern.bsky.social told @latimes.com. "This is so transparently an abuse of power — a shakedown."

"Trump wants his *museum/shrine/propaganda palace that probably won't actually have a government-run library because he's gonna gut the National Archives' budget* set in Florida"

Twelve years ago today, Edward Snowden — a longtime @freedom.press board member — blew the whistle on global mass surveillance. The revelations take on new urgency as the Trump administration works to build a ā€œmaster databaseā€ containing our most sensitive information.

The inner workings of an agency's decision-making process are not worth more protection than the public's health - but that's what the EPA told me when it denied my FOIA for a copy of the plan to eliminate all limits on greenhouse gases from coal and gas-fired power plants that was cited here:

Watch @trevortimm.bsky.social ‬ and‬ @ryanlizza.bsky.social discuss why press freedom is vital to democracy — regardless of who's in power. They’re joined by @jamesrisen.bsky.social & @laurenleharper.bsky.social for FPF’s ā€œBurn after reporting: Leak investigations and the press.ā€

"It's an all-out assault on the right to information" On @meidastouch.com‬’s ā€œThe Court of History," @laurenleharper.bsky.social warns: The Trump administration’s goal is to become the sole source of info — even if it’s false.

Local officials can disagree with a newspaper's coverage, but they have no right to retaliate. ā€œIt’s very much unconstitutional for the government to in any way punish the press over its editorial or content decisions,ā€ @seth-stern.bsky.social told @phoenixnewtimes.com.

Public employees have a right to speak to the press. The government can't gag them and certainly can't force them to mislabel facts as their opinions. Greene County, VA, needed a reminder of these First Amendment basics, so @freedom.press, @spj-posts.bsky.social, and others gave them one.

Taking money away from NPR and PBS hurts Americans who rely on them for news. Doing so to retaliate against @npr.org and @pbs.org because the president and other politicians disagree with their coverage violates the Constitution.

Last week, Seth Stern, @freedom.press’ advocacy director, and Lauren Harper, Daniel Ellsberg Chair on Government Secrecy, joined @projectcensored.bsky.social to discuss press freedom and recent FOIA findings. Listen:

@latimes.com reporter James Queally was subpoenaed May 9 by two @knockdotla.bsky.social reporters to testify at the upcoming trial in their civil rights lawsuit against the city of LA and multiple police officers. A hearing on Queally’s motion to quash is set for June 26:

SPJ and @freedom.press led a letter from a coalition of press freedom and transparency organizations urging Steve Catalano, Greene County Board of Supervisors Chairman, to rethink an 'entirely absurd' gag policy. Read the press release and letter: www.spj.org/rights-organ...
