While we have challenges to confront in today’s political landscape, we have hope for the future. A better future for public education starts with proper funding, trusted professionals, student-centered resources, and meeting every learner’s basic needs. #FreedomToRead #PathForward #BooksNotBans

This quote reminds us that open, honest conversations between parents and kids are the antidote to fear… and fear is what fuels censorship. When we trust young readers and engage with them about what they read, we build critical thinking, connection, and empathy. #FreedomToRead #EndBookBans

Being banned is not a badge of honor. It’s erasure. It’s lost income. It’s emotional toll. And it silences the very voices we need most. www.freedomtoreadproject.org/being_banned... #FreedomToRead #BooksNotBans #LetThemRead

The @txfreedomread.bsky.social continued to show up and call others into action over a very long and discouraging legislative session - and their efforts helped stop HB3225. 👏 to Anne, Frank, and Laney for volunteering your time to protect education access for your kids and communities at large!

Two things: 1. Here’s an example for SCOTUS where offering a parent opt-out could become a huge burden on the district. 2. Not surprising knowing “parental rights” laws are a lie, Walters doesn’t seem enthusiastic to honor the rights of parents that want to opt-out. popular.info/p/update-okl...

Unicorns Are The Worst by Alex Willan is a hilarious, heartwarming tale about assumptions, jealousy, and learning to appreciate others for who they really are. Banning this delightful story only teaches kids to fear what they don’t understand. Let’s keep the magic on the shelves. #FreedomToRead

When you wonder who’s going to stand up against book bans—sometimes the answer is you. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to care. Progress doesn’t happen on its own. It happens because you showed up. #FreedomToRead #FightCensorship #ShowUp

“We do not protect liberty by silencing it, we do not strengthen education by censoring it, and we do not honor democracy by fearing diversity," Rep. Mihaela Plesa of Dallas, whose parents fled from Romania's communist regime said. www.statesman.com/story/news/p...

Today, we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. This Memorial Day, the Freedom to Read Project reflects on the freedoms they fought to protect—including the freedom to think, learn, and read without censorship. Let us remember through action. Let us honor through vigilance.

Update: this session’s school library book ban bill- SB 13 - has been added to the calendar for Monday. 😩 Keep calling your reps to urge them to run out the clock on this horrible bill. If this passes, we will not be able to undo the harm done to TX public school libraries.

What happens when state politicians, not educators or communities, decide what books students can access? Spoiler: It’s already happening. From Utah to Florida, states are stripping local districts of the power to choose what belongs on library shelves. www.freedomtoreadproject.org/unprecedente...

Too Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff is a beautifully written, deeply moving story about identity, grief, & self-discovery through the eyes of a transgender boy navigating the ghosts of his past. Banning this book means silencing a story that helps so many young readers feel seen, safe, & understood.

When deciding whether a book belongs on school shelves, let’s err on the side of education, not fear. Books spark questions, build empathy, and help students make sense of a complex world. Shielding kids from tough topics doesn’t protect them, it leaves them unprepared.

A district administrator told me that there is nothing unusual about sourcing “internal review” ideas from parents. However, as someone who has looked at thousands of emails about internal and formal book reviews in Katy ISD, I can tell you- this is not normal.

We spoke today to encourage Texans to defend their institutions, like public libraries, by getting engaged. See @txfreedomread.bsky.social threads for more ways to get involved.

School librarians do so much more than check out books. They’re literacy champions, research guides, tech navigators, and safe spaces for every student. When schools lose librarians, students lose opportunities.

First, book banners came for school libraries. www.wfyi.org/news/article...

Sorry to harsh the vibe: South Carolina just voted to ban 10 more books from all public schools across the state. This makes South Carolina the leader in state-sanctioned book bans. The decision happened fast, and it put incredible power into the hands of ONE parent. bookriot.com/south-caroli...

HUGE NEWS. The judge in the case where 21 state attorneys generals sued the Trump administration over dismantling the IMLS just issued an injunction in favor of the plaintiffs. This is good news & the judge further indicates that the plaintiffs have a STRONG case here. bookriot.com/the-latest-f...

When the people going after school libraries tell you, “it’s not banning - you can still buy it at the store or get it in the public library,” but then they go and pressure the books off the shelves in those locations too…
