πŸ”Ž Sharing your sightings of frog and toad spawn helps to provide a better understand of when frogs and toads are breeding, but how can you tell the difference? You can add any sightings to our #SpawnSurvey map: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/advice-resou... Common Toad spawn photo by Kate Wright

#WorldWildlifeDay is the perfect day to get outside and spot some freshwater wildlife! πŸ”Ž From ponds to springs and streams, the UK has a diverse range of freshwater habitats where plants and animals thrive. πŸ’š πŸ“Έ Southern Hawker by Kevin Baker, Diving Beetle by Neil Phillips

HAVE YOU GOT SPAWN YET? 🐸 As the weather warms up there are signs of spring starting to appear all around us. One of the most iconic of these is frogspawn in our local ponds. We’ve had lots of enquiries about breeding and spawning. Answer to some FAQs πŸ‘‡ www.arc-trust.org/news/signs-o...

Frogs opened up a new front in the fight for survival at #Ashlawncutting. Now spawning in the pathside pool near the marsh so 4 places. We're a long way from 4 year ago 2,000+ count but it may be a good sign of recovery of population. @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social

πŸ’§ Lakes are home to a range of plants and animals from tiny crustaceans to freshwater plants. Some lakes are also vital habitats for rare and threatened freshwater wildlife such as the Glutinous Snail. 🐌 Find out more: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/habitats/lak... πŸ“Έ by Ian Hughes

On way home from lek with @dmesg.bsky.social called at #DyfiOspreyProject Cors Dyfi for walk around. Plenty of Frogs, Toads and frogspawn on the reserve. Welsh rarebit in Caffi TΕ· Maenan delicious #ukwildlife @the-wildlifetrusts.bsky.social @froglife.bsky.social @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social

🐌 The Glutinous Snail is a beautiful water snail, with a delicate shell covered by a jelly-like mantle. This mantle gives it a glassy look and makes it sticky to the touch. Find out more: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/species/glut... Photo 1: Roy Anderson, Photo 2 & 3: Ian Hughes

🌱 We're looking for schools in Buckinghamshire to join our #GroWet school sessions! Can you help us to spread the word? Students will learn about plant life and freshwater environments, while taking part in practical conservation work. Find out more: freshwaterhabitats.b-cdn.net/app/uploads/...

Yessss!! I wasn’t going to check the pond today as it’s still cold, I assumed the frogs would wait for it to warm up a bit. So glad I did. Two weeks later than last year. Better report it to @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social

Small waters such as ponds and alkaline fens have traditionally been undervalued and overlooked, so we’re pleased to see them recognised in the latest Office for Environmental Protection assessment. Our CEO, Professor @jeremybiggs.bsky.social explains what this means:

We've now used all of the first batch of the 3 metre cut oak boards funded thanks to a grant from the @freshwaterhabitats.bsky.social. Hammered into the fen, they're already stopping a lot of clean spring water draining off the fen into the Brook. πŸ˜€ #FenRestoration 🌍 @judywebb.bsky.social

It's that time of the year again, with some nice pics to celebrate. You can join in here: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/news/pondnet...

🌱 This spring, people living in and around Llanwrtyd Wells will be helping to restore freshwater habitats across the River Irfon catchment. Through our #GroWet project, volunteers will grow freshwater plants at home until they are ready to be planted out in the summer:

Incredible photos taken by Simon Batty in Ceredigion, Wales. 🐸 Simon shared: "Each year it brings me great joy looking out for the very first signs of the frogs arrival, and once they start spawning and croaking en masse it brings a very big smile to my face as the first big sign of springtime."

Skipwith National Nature Reserve is a popular destination, but not many will know Horseshoe Pond! πŸ’™ It is a favourite of Anne Carter's, our Northern England Regional Officer, because it's home to the rapidly-declining Pillwort. Find out more ‡️

Our leaky dams have doubled up as wildlife bridges in Buckinghamshire! Which species can you spot in the photos? πŸ‘€ Leaky dams are used to hold back water during storm events. These leaky dams were installed as part of our North Buckinghamshire Freshwater Resilience Project.

It’s so exciting to see your #SpawnSurvey sightings starting to come in! πŸ“· Don't forget to record any sightings of toad and frog spawn to the PondNet Spawn Survey on our website. 🐸 πŸ‘‰ freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/spawn-survey

"It’s not the first time we’ve heard newts being used as the scapegoat for development delays. But, let’s be clear, it’s simply not true." Read our CEO @jeremybiggs.bsky.social' response to the Chancellor's speech on proposed planning reforms. freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/news/are-new...

Did you know that dogs can impact the quality of ponds? 🐢 Our recent blog by Gemma Stride in our New Forest team offers advice on the best ways to enjoy walks with your dog whilst protecting our precious freshwater habitats: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/news/the-imp...

πŸ“’ We're #hiring! Could you be our new Data Officer? This is a new role in the organisation and reflects an urgent requirement to collate, organise and manage a large volume of research, survey and other data. Find out more: freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/about-us/jobs/
