While not front page, I was happy to see this article in NYtimes about importance of fundamental research. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/s...

Over 90% of Americans rely on federally funded science, But only 10% are worried about losing access to it. That’s a dangerous disconnect. Help us close the gap. Join our #SummerFightForScience and help spread the word about how essential science is to everyday lives. www.npr.org/2025/05/06/n...

Congratulations @ulises-glz.bsky.social!! Thanks for making me a part of your graduate journey!!

The Spencer Foundation is offering bridge funding for those who lost NSF research grants.

Groundbreaking study in Cell from @leventallab.bsky.social: phospholipid asymmetry is a defining feature of the plasma membrane and cholesterol fills the holes — major implications for how this membrane works. A #lipidtime must-read! www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

Here's our newest study: we reveal the molecular principles of neuronal excitation by glutamate, and how physiological temperatures influence this process. www.nature.com/articles/s41... www.nature.com/articles/d41... Led by @anish-mondal07.bsky.social, published in @natureportfolio.nature.com

Congratulations, Eric and Vasanthi, for well-deserved recognition at #BPS2025! And many thanks to Sudha and Chris (not shown) for the best of biophysics in LA.

Nice paper. I recommend to check the review file for a lot of extra interesting details. Still a lot to understand about TARP action, despite >20 years of work from many groups. #iglurs #biophysics #receptors

Sad to hear about the passing of Prof. Mike Sheetz. He was a pioneer and leader in Mechanobiology.

One main pain point: interdisciplinary work is often judged by the highest standards in *both* disciplines. This creates an almost impossible burden, effectively extinguishing creative work. Sure, some standards are there for a reason, but more often than not, they are just stock critiques.

Good read discussing scientific publishing trends. I liked the discussion on turn around times and impact inflation of different journals.

As the chair of the Intrinsically Disordered Proteins Subgroup of @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social I'm happy to announce the exciting scientific program put together by program co-chairs Dorothee Dormann & Lukasz Joachimiak. Looking forward to seeing you in Los Angeles! www.biophysics.org/2025meeting/...

Re-reading your rejected manuscript

Nominate a colleague - or yourself - to speak in the "New and Notable Symposium" at #BPS2025 Annual Meeting in LA. Hurry, Deadline is Dec 2: www.surveymonkey.com/r/HPMRT6H

As PI’s we never receive training on how to manage people. I still struggle with this aspect of running a lab. This is good read and reminder on how to build a supportive environment.

I want to credit @popstarlab.bsky.social for the great idea to make this feed! Thx Gabriela. Paging @frettinglab.bsky.social @ecekuru.bsky.social @wdhale.bsky.social and all other #iGluRs fans...

Great visit to UT-Knoxville. Was able to hang out with @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social colleagues and hear about their awesome science. @rajanl.bsky.social @joshilaboratory.bsky.social, Sarah, Fran and Jeremy!

Late abstract submission is still open for #bps2025! Join your community in Los Angeles and get important feedback on your research! www.biophysics.org/2025meeting/...

May be a bit premature, but here is the Starter Pack I am trying to populate for #IonChannel research. Ping me and I’ll add you obviously! (Or to be removed) go.bsky.app/6taxHfx @jgenphysiol.bsky.social @auditorynerves.bsky.social @plesslab.bsky.social @rainbowlabuol.bsky.social

This paper is part of the Biophysical Journal special issue titled “Advances in Mechanotransduction, Dedicated to Frederick Sachs.” Deadline is coming soon, but contact me or Arthur Beyder if you need an extension.

When applying to NSF for funding, each senior personnel has to provide a “Collaborators and Other Affiliations” (COA) form, which can be quite onerous. A couple of years ago I created a tool bit.ly/NSF_COA for automating this, and recently hardened it. I hope it is of use, and feedback is welcome! 🧪

Download our database of 492 (!) funding opportunities for EARLY-CAREER FACULTY AND RESEARCHERS. For each entry, we provide link to funder, description, amount, deadline, and eligibility criteria (e.g. citizenship). Download freely here: research.jhu.edu/rdt/funding-...

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens. Don’t think it won’t happen again when they come for the “undocumented.”

Just want to go on record as never knowing that eLife had an impact factor. So I won’t miss it. You can choose to ignore impact factors. (By the way, you can calculate the impact factor of eLife or any journal yourself, if you are so interested, it’s public information!)

yeah... thats also beyond depressing.

For a PhD student, choosing a good lab is 10 times more important than choosing a particular topic to study

I can't pretend to understand hackathons but this is so impressive- a diagnosis for 40% of participants at a rare disease hackathon www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Reminder for newcomers that bioRxiv has Bluesky accounts in every subject category - great way to keep up (please re-skeet) connect.biorxiv.org/news/2023/09...

AlphaFold 3 model code and weights are now available from DeepMind github.com/google-deepm...

Another tip for Bluesky newbies - no, it's not as fast-paced here, immediate engagement - here, YOU are the algorithm so you need to engage! Post, comment, re-post others, follow lots to start with - engagement is the key to traction and interaction here. Be proactive, not passive. Well worth it!
