Likewise, we are confusing the rate of innovation of tools with the rate of innovation of durable skills. (Karim Meghji)--just because the tools are new doesn't mean we have figured out the skills #SXSWedu panel onThe Future of Teaching in an Age of AI

I appreciate Future of Teaching in an Age of AI panelists pushback against rhetoric urging ed to AI revolution--If education is a little late in being revolutionized, that’s for the best rather than risk doing it wrong. (Jake Baskin) #SXSWedu

in a session on nudges for self-efficacy; One of the sources of self-efficacy is vicarious experiences–is this like when a novice cook (I may or may not be related to) watches a cooking video on youtube and is confident they can reproduce the same complex recipe? #SXSWedu

Panel description of learning while earnings says that 40% of full-time undergraduates work; a recent survey at our institutions 60% of students responding said they worked outside of school #SXSWedu

Next up at #SXSWedu Learning While Earning: Rethinking Student Employment; panel promises to explore new models of student work that are disrupting the broken economics of working while in college & creating meaningful work experience for today’s increasingly diverse college students.

panelists: Why have elementary students use AI? Young children already exposed to AI through Alexa, toys, media & creating mental models; we don’t want them to think AI is a magic box that's always right; instead teach them to break it; know limits so they don’t have to unlearn wrong models later

next up at #SXSWedu AI Tools to Support Literacy & Computational Thinking: "lessons learned through the creation and implementation of an AI-storytelling platform co-designed with students and educators from a low-income NYC public school district"

AI & the Skills-First Economy panelists pointed to how ossified O-Net is but for this to work, need to design systems with common language, skills, values that everyone agrees on; how do we keep it from ossifying while making it interoperable and universally valued? #SXSWEDU

"It is not the technology that is coming to replace jobs, but it's the ability to learn to use the tools" #SXSWedu in reference to threat of AI (and whatever new tech comes next)

AI & the Skills-First Economy: Navigating Hype & Reality #sxswedu suggesting AI would make it possible to feasibly make skills first hiring a reality vs. yes/no filtering; current systems holding us back, e.g., funding from degrees & certificates not skills taught

#SXSWedu enjoying the keynote focusing on Tiny Experiments —reminds me of Small Teaching, Atomic Habits. Success=learning something new rather than some pre-determined goal

Congrats to Carl Blyth & Joshua Thoms co-editors of Open Ed & 2nd Language Learning & Teaching-- Honorable Mention--MLA's Mildenberger Prize--top book in 2nd language learning and teaching. rebeccafrostdavis.wordpress.com/2024/01/06/h... I co-wrote ch. 10 on bridging English & Foreign Language DH

Just in time for the holidays! @triproftri.bsky.social

New position paper just published! "The born-digital in future digital scholarly editing and publishing" www.nature.com/articles/s41... It's open access (thanks to Irish Research Council) @uccresearch.bsky.social

Need a quick, readable intro to the issues and challenges around #MultilingualDH? Check out Ch. 19, "Language Is Not a Default Setting: Countering DH’s English Problem" by me and @diyclassics.bsky.social, now available online!

looking forward to reading this @hauntologist.bsky.social

The book Angel co-edited just won a well-deserved award at ASA. Such a huge loss for the field and everyone who knew him and had a chance to get to know his generous spirit.

Feeling you on this one!

Mathematical Humanists, a series of workshops on the mathematical concepts that undergird digital humanities research funded by the NEH and hosted by George Mason and UCLA, is seeking participants. My department is hiring! We are looking scholars interested in the creative and critical application of computing in cultural heritage -- e.g. digital humanities, museum informatics, digital curation, more. PLEASE SHARE! arizona.csod.com/ux/ats/caree...

I think I just broke "draft with AI" status update in Asana. sigh. it's still just spinning. I was much happier with AI formula writing in Smartsheet yesterday. In Asana my AI-drafted status updates keep repeating whatever I wrote in the previous one instead of all the work done since then.

The DH2024 conference @dh2024.bsky.social organizers have extended the submission deadline until 10 December, 11:59 pm ET. Find out more at dh2024.adho.org

A reminder that the DH scholarly org ACH (@ach.bsky.social) is seeking someone to join our leadership team! For best consideration, apply by 1/15 (the process is quick!). Details on why you might dig doing this: ach.org/blog/2023/10...

Hello! Do you like *free* things that are *boring* for most people, but *interesting* for a few? Then maybe you'd like a copy of my book *Modeling Scientific Communities* - downloadable from Cambridge for the next two weeks- www.cambridge.org/core/element...

My two favorite lessons from this semester's Cinema + Media Studies Methods class: "What Values Animate Your Research?" and "Bespoke Methods" (border / disability / madness / Gaza as method) 😊 cimsmethods.wordsinspace.net/2023/portfol... cimsmethods.wordsinspace.net/2023/portfol...

Looking for examples of undergrad assignments to help students develop skills in evaluating AI output and adding human value. Any examples to share? We are preparing a faculty development event on this topic. Thanks in advance! @pfyfe.bsky.social @triproftri.bsky.social @mkgold.bsky.social

Self-recommending, despite the sparsity of Maimonides references.

Considering student guidance for a reflection assignment: "Observing trends or themes: You may use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools to highlight trends or patterns in your participation file, but you need to then reflect on what those trends or patterns mean yourself." Thoughts?

What's better than bonus coffee? (found a second cup in the thermal carafe I left to finish filling when I got my first cup this morning) ☕

Another thing that makes this all feel like the plot of an incestuous SF novel-of-ideas: our growing habit of first-naming business leaders. Satya. Mira. Sama. Ilya. Greg.

IMO it's a mistake to take the ideological conflict seriously. "Xrisk" and "acceleration" are flip sides of a single drama, which is "we're going to build something so cool it's dangerous." The actual conflict here seems to be how much OAI should become a *retail* tech co, versus a B2B think tank.
