Off digitally this morning to the University of Gdansk to lead a workshop on using the Historical Problem Space framework for designing analog history games. It's my first workshop on the topic & a bit of a preview for parts of _Designing Historical Games for Class: A Practical Guide for Educators_

$12 hardcover $3 Kindle. Though not a sleeper hit (the sleeper part is accurate), I really enjoyed writing this one and you get a nice though-not-exhaustive survey of political changes in the Republic, through focus on one family www.amazon.com/Clan-Fabius-...

Thanks to a loud public outcry and a relentless media campaign from outdoors influencers the Trump administration is reversing its plan to eliminate thousands of national parks jobs. Amazing work everyone. Keep speaking up, it matters!

Currently traveling for a conference, so no screenshots on hand, but released the largest update yet to Seyahat last night. Increased the demo play time by about 25% - however, the Mac build keeps causing issues, so I haven't gotten that out yet, stay tuned #gtp #ottoman #digitalhumanities

Very excited to chat with @flintdibble.bsky.social today about the cuneiform world and wherever that takes us!

Okay collecting my thoughts here for my classes tomorrow 🧵(#gamingthepast). Tried out Brass:Lancashire with my 10th grade Honors Modern World History -- excellent and hard working students who also happen to be really nice! 2 copies of the game and a class of 14. 🗃️ 1/

Hey so cool news for the thousands of people who were hype for our Mongolian courier rider game a few months ago: we're doing a giveaway for 10 Early Access Steam Keys! To participate: 1. Follow our pre-page on kickstarter (click 'notify me on launch') 2. Like and Retweet this post

Had a fascinating PD day yesterday where we (educators) focused on AI. We investigated at the start of year but this was an update to see what has changed & discuss what it means for pedagogy (believe me, most are well aware & very concerned abt environmental impact; did not escape discussion) 1/🧵🗃️

Have to say, I'm getting excited about the workshop I'm digitally giving at the Unconference on Games with History University of Gdansk, Poland on using the Historical Problem Space framework to design historical analog games. 1/

A variant of the ask-me-anything post from earlier. If any of the work I am doing or posts I am making sound like the sorts of things you'd like to do in your own history classes (or social studies, or humanities), take a chance & reach out. I will help (a lot)! DMs, @ posts, emails -- all good!

As if @gamingthepast.bsky.social needs more to read with a busy schedule; but our brief mention of classroom matrix games reminded me of Can You Beat Churchill? Although it covers undergrad exercises it addresses some issues doing this at the high school level. If you haven’t seen this already....

Medievalism/games your thing? Do we have the event for you!

So with my 9ths and 10ths I stress that -history is a selective interpretation/representation of the past - all sources are biased. To have no preconceived ideas and leanings is to be dead. All we living humans have them - so, sourcing, context, and corroborate are key.

I’ve been collecting examples of game journalism/reviewing/writing for a fall class & have a stack of 2 kinds of cautionary examples: 1. Author played one game & thinks they’re founding a whole new field 2. Author has no cultural or theoretical frame of reference beyond the games they’ve played

I feel that way too, but I think maybe it's a sign of hope, as precarious as it may be.

It's great to see this level of historical thinking in the original 4x, Civ

This @lukeplunkett.com review of Civ 7 - aftermath.site/civilization... - demonstrates what I talk about in my article on the rewards of ideological games - whynotgames.in/2022/07/22/r.... An ideological stance gives your game both direction and approach so your changes to genre have a reason to be.

That was a great round of yesterday of ask-me-anythings abt history games as history, whether in or outside of history learning & education? How about today? I always appreciate the thinking you inspire!!! No question too small, big or, silly. C'mon, let's talk about history and games!

I'm afraid that's a question I know nothing about. Any #gameDesigners out there know about custom components out of nice materials?
