El Capitan displays a massive American flag upside down—the traditional signal of distress or extreme emergency.

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

Nice reporting by Ben Mueller on the Federal Register block www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s...

Nature Story "Revealed: NIH research grants still frozen despite lawsuits challenging Trump order" (with non-paywalled link) archive.ph/7h6Im

Ok scientists & those who love science 🧪: here is another exhortation. Call Congress TODAY about the freeze on NIH Council Meetings and Study Sections. Emphasize that this means NO new grants are being funded & labs will soon start to shut down and fire employees. Phone numbers are at: 5calls.org

🤩

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

#nih funded projects are #economic drivers and multipliers usually $2.5 for region for every $1 of nih grant funded. Please contact your elected representatives so that your region doesn’t lose these investments in jobs and economy #medsky #immunosky #neuroskyence #academicsky

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. https://go.nature.com/4gM6oW4

Reaching out to all Americans through the media to explain how decreasing funding of the NIH will have irreversible harm for developing therapies for all diseases. Please spread the word to your families and friends and contact your congressional representatives. www.nbcnews.com/science/scie...

The thing about destroying NIH is NIH’s scale in medical research just dwarfs everyone else. For ex, in 2023 the American Cancer Society gave out $64.5 million worth of grants. Sounds big, right? But NIH’s budget was $49 billion. With a B. Kill NIH and the floor drops out of US science.

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME Congress didn’t pass a law requiring NIH-funded trials to include women until 1993. Drug trials with government funding only started including women in the NINETIES And that’s only drug trials! And not ones with private funding! Health research FAMOUSLY excludes women.

This how it’s done 👍

Finally a cause worth some pushback. Lets see how this pans out 🤦🏼‍♀️

Trump calling Zelenskyy a “moderately successful comedian” is a tad on the nose from a washed up reality “star” 😣 apnews.com/article/russ...

A freeze on meetings of expert panels that peer review grant proposals at the National Institutes of Health is kicking in this week. Follow Science’s coverage of President Donald Trump’s impact on U.S. research and science globally. ⬇️ scim.ag/40XtSSi

Imagine being rich enough to do anything you want and choosing to take food and medicine from starving children to give yourself even more money.

‘absolutely nothing in what Musk has done to date shows even the slightest interest in “efficiency.”’ Pay attention, scientists. Don’t be tempted to appease Musk&Trump by doing what they say—in the name of efficiency. Look behind the curtain. Stop the coup first 🧪 @paulwaldman.bsky.social:

“Indefinitely on hold” Can’t this be overturned through the courts?! 🤬 www.thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...

By attacking DEI programs that are aimed at addressing systemic racism, Trump has made his goals clear: He wants to take us back in time.

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles infection. But infants under 12 months old are not eligible for the vaccine, leaving them vulnerable. When measles spreads due to low vaccination rates, it puts our youngest—and most defenseless—children at the greatest risk.

Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges. This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.

Howard University is now a R1 university, the first HBCU with a research one designation. H-U definitely knows!

Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s idea of efficiency is stopping research on curing cancer.

We are calling for a nationwide and international boycott of all Elon Musk-related products and services. Sell your Tesla shares, avoid buying Tesla vehicles, cancel Starlink, and delete your X accounts.

Putting RFK Jr in charge of our nation’s health is like putting Jeffrey Epstein in charge of child safety.

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

Interested in neuroimmune interactions in the intestine? Our new manuscript describing how Substance P receptor signaling can alter the host response to Citrobacter rodentium is now out in PNAS. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I wrote a piece about what the Trump administration is doing to NIH sponsored research & what the lawyers are trying to do to stop it. Along the way, I got the chance to better understand the work my daughter is doing around climate change & nutritional food. joycevance.substack.com/p/cutting-ca...

Threats to the NIH and our research infrastructure hit me twice- once as a scientist, and again as a patient whose next option will be a clinical trial. Remember that there are real people’s lives at stake.

Great. Let’s reduce vaccination worldwide and expect no negative impact in the US and UK 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I can’t believe this needs to be said, but cutting funding for cancer research is not how you make America great. thehill.com/policy/healt...

NIH has cut billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

My feed is overwhelmed with scientists right now calling out the catastrophic consequences of the NIH indirect cost order from last night. If those same people aren't also speaking out against the anti-trans, anti-DEI, anti-immigrant orders...we are lost. The only path forward is solidarity.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Excellent thread explaining what’s at stake with the decision to cap NIH indirect costs at %15 😣 I worry for my college town where the uni provides many of the jobs for residents 😞

A Primer on Indirect Cost Rates

These overhead rates are negotiated. Lowering it unilaterally to 15% is another way to destroy science in the US. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
