Awesome new work from @labschneeberger.bsky.social (with a small contribution from the Weigel lab). Experimentally observed mutational patterns in centromeres underpin a model that recapitulates intra-specific centromere divergence! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

A big thanks to the @sfbd.bsky.social , @maitrejl.bsky.social & @embo.org YIP for what has been a very sunny & exciting #DevBio + beautiful hikes around #Cassis. & now everyone in there knows about #Ichthyosporea & #Expansion #Microscopy Which is a big ➕️ #ShapingLife3

Highlighted paper! Daisuke Yamagishi, et al. open a new front in the drive to understand photosymbiosis in protists. Article➡️ doi.org/10.1111/jeu.... #protistsonsky

The failure of the National Academy of Sciences USA to make a clear and unequivocal statement about the disastrous Trump administration science policies — it lets all of us down and dooms them to eventual irrelevance.

I contributed an essay and some images to the new Living Futures series, an outgrowth of the fantastic Living Histories series organized by Sri Biswas and others. medium.com/@thelhseries... iyerbiswas.com/outreach/liv... 1/3

How many paths lead to evolutionary innovation? How versatile are genomic toolkits? Excited to announce my new @pnas.org paper addressing these questions in collaboration with @rokaslab.bsky.social, @hittingerlab.bsky.social, and the Pennell lab! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This is truly BRILLIANT science communication—clear, compelling, & convincing while also fast, funny, & entertaining Like most of those working in science & public health, based on the best available evidence I believe Covid was zoonotic in origin—& this superb episode makes me even more convinced

We are highlighting Pleasantine Mill, 2025 @bsdb.bsky.social Wolpert Medal winner, as an extraordinary biologist this week. Shocking. 🙄 Also, dear NYT, are we supposed to feel sorry for this blight on humanity?

I had an excellent time at Choanocon in Paris meeting old friends (some who I had never met in 3D!) and making new ones. Congratulations to @thibautbrunet.bsky.social and team for some excellent organising. There was a squeaky pig, there were baguettes, there were weird bugs, the people were happy.

Happy to announce that our study on the latent cis-regulatory potential of mobile DNA is officially published! TLDR: mobile DNA in bacteria (Insertion Sequences) have a proclivity for evolving new promoters. At least 25% of them probably already encode functional promoters as well.
